Civil "at home" ceremony

My daughter is doing a quick ceremony the evening before she leaves for Mexico. They will consider the Mexico wedding date their "real" anniversary. There are lots of hoops to jump through for a ceremony to be legal in Mexico, thus the 2 ceremonies.

In the US for the marriage to be legal you have to do alot more and pay more. Like get blood test, have documents translated into Spanish ect..and have two ceremonies there: one in Spanish with a judge and one with a minister. It takes alot of complications out of it when u get legally married in the states.

we are also doing an at home JP civil wedding, but will not concider that anything. We will celebrate out religious ceremony in mexico as our wedding date!!

Notary Publics have the authority to marry in certain states (i.e. Florida), but you should check in your state to make sure they are legally allowed to do so.

Sorry I'm a little late to this forum. =) But do any of you think we will run into any probs with waiting until we get back to go to the JP??

That's really what we have been thinking about so that when we say our vows for the first time, it will be special in front of all our friends and family. I just want to make sure there are not any problems with it.

We had a beautiful church ceremony ( our very wonderful friend who is a minister married us) with our children hours before leaving for the DR. It was really beautiful and special but it in no way took away from our ceremony in the DR. We also told no one about this ceremony. My siggy picture is actually during this ceremony.

We are getting married before we go and my FI is also wanting to go soon to get legally married (our Mexico ceremony is in November!). I don't think I can pretend I am not married for like 8 or 9 months. For those who got/are getting married a few weeks to months beforehand-- did you/are you changing your name (if you're doing that) when you do it? I have no will power and I will walk around like Mrs. Simmons after the legal ceremony. He won't be able to pretend either and I am worried about taking away from the special-ness of what we consider our 'real' ceremony in Mexico. Totally stumped.

I hear you! There is no way I could do it way in advance, i would want to tell everyone! I think we are going to do it just before we go, or just after we get back depending upon what dates teh city hall has open. I think it will be nice to avoid all teh blood tests etc I just want to relax when we are there.

Long Update: Our municipality was already booked into June …in February!… for civil ceremonies so I had to find an officiant to legalize our marriage…

 

I called a few ministers and ugh, on the phone they were overall very dry towards the concept of a bare ceremony…which is what I thought I wanted to keep Mexico “the one”…

 

But any way I tried to rationalize it (as in, the legal one won’t be important lol) this is such a great and unforgettable moment between FI & I, and if these ministers are dry over the phone, imagine them during the ceremony…

 

So I decided to go with a really sweet minister that wanted to make the civil ceremony a little more special from the start (whom I said no to because I wanted to keep it bare and she recommended getting legally married after Mexico if that was the case)…Needless to say, I’m glad I’ll be keeping it simple but genuine in the U.S. before we spill our hearts out in front of our friends and family in Mex <3

You'll save time, hassles and money if you take care of the legal aspects of the wedding where you live and have the nice DW later in Mexico. Legal issues here are, of course, different and the language barrier never helps. But your wedding will turn out really great, wedding coordinators are really great here and they know Americans pretty well.
