Civil "at home" ceremony

Can a notary marry you? You dont have to go to the courthouse?

We have been trying to decide what to do about this. A friend of ours is going to do the online marriage certification, and she will marry us officially and unofficialy in Mexico. We were wondering or thinking maybe we can get the paperwork and take it down there so my sister, who is my witness, can still sign, but we'll still say we were married here in the states.

 

Is this crazy, or does anyone think this would work?

FI and I are totally minimizing our courthouse stuff. No lunch, no nothing (although FMIL is pushing for a bit of a family celebration but my family won't be there so WTF??!)

 

If you want to save the specialness of your vows, then tell the judge (or whomever) the situation and to give you the stripped down version. Then prepare your own vows for your DW. That's where it will be special vs. the formality stuff at the courthouse.

Totally feel you on wanting your DW ceremony to feel like THE ceremony :/

 

Our Cabo wedding date is May 3, 2008; civil ceremony (not legal).

This is the date we will consider our wedding date forever…

April 21st was to be the legal U.S. civil ceremony date with a JP.

Well, I just called my city and that date is completely booked - the whole month of April is! So I called neighboring cities and they won’t perform a ceremony for outside residents! WTH?

 

Now I either have the option of scheduling a legal ceremony date with my city in May when we get back (which would probably be cheaper to do) or pay an ordained minister to marry us legally on the date we want.

 

Only problem with that is most ordained ministers in NJ I've contacted want to make the ceremony more special than we’d like and they would run us about $250-300!!

I am also thinking of doing the at home thing before we go down to Mexico, although the idea of doing that after sounds even better! That way the Mexico wedding will "feel " real

 

I ghuess its going to depend on how much all of the legalities will cost at whichever resort we choose. I am thinking of Dreams Cancun right now, but I am really having a hard time choosing a place.

I am warming up to the idea of a Civil Cermony at home. It saves you the money of having to get the blood tests done (well at least in Mexico), and you don't have to arrive 3-4 days in advance of your actually wedding day to and I am sure there are some other savings as well. I guess I am just going to look at it like having two weddings and one just happens to make it so friends and families get a vacation.

We are totally going to do the legal stuff here beforehand. This way when the wedding is over in MX we will be officially married. I'm just considering the one here NOTHING! And then our real ceremony and date will be October 10th. Only problem now is that FI wants to get legally married in a couple of weeks...he's totally falling into the whole idea of just saying "Let's just go get married!". He still wants the Mexico wedding, but apparently doesn't want to wait to get legally married....but it's not like we are going to wear the rings or anything beforehand..who knows!

We are going to get married before we leave for Dreams. We are not telling anyone expect our parents to keep the DW special. And we also will use the destination date as our wedding date.

We've also decided to do an at home ceremony. I just think it will be easier for us (not to mention the fact that I hate blood tests)! We are only telling our parents so everyone else won't have a clue and we'll use our MX wedding date as our official wedding date.

Sorry if I am being ignorant, but is your DW not legal?

 

I am from the Uk, and getting married at ROR (in 5 wks!!) but it will be a legal ceremony in the eyes of the UK law

 

Sorry, I am just confused!!!
