How to decide where to get married?

HI! I can offer you my opinion for what it's worth! I have been to the bahamas, flew out of philly, very short, nonstop flight. that would probably work but it is not that cheap. we stayed at the riu there, people were great, place was clean but slightly older plus it tends to be more money than some places. We have also been to the DR. It was okay but I don't think i would go back. We stayed in La romana which is south of punta cana. It was absolutely beautiful, without a doubt but it wasn't my type of place. I do hear great things about punta cana and it is a short flight. My TA said that when she helps people choose wedding locations, she usually says the DR, Mexico, and Jamaica based on price and location. We chose Jamaica and are super excited about it. Hope this helps a little! Let us know what you decide! Amanda

Sounds like a good choice. There is a lot of info on dreams tulum on this forum. Pros- you a near the ruins, it's a beautiful hotel
cons- it's pretty far from the airport, maybe 1 1/2 hours

I tried to avoid mexico at first because it was a place I had already been. I'm really glad I chose riviera maya. There are so many fun things to do in the area. Guests have been really happy to see how affordable it is.

So funny - was going to say the same thing!

Hi there, I'm from Central NJ. I agree with few of the ladies, Jamaica is the best way to go. Negril or Couples are nice. You are lucky your MIL will even gets on a plane for a 4 hour flight..... My MIL REFUSED to get on a plane period... so to accomodate her we had a civil wedding then we renewed our vows in Dreams, Los Cabos Mexico Nov. 29th 2007. It worked out great because i am originally from California. The rest of my family & friends met us in sunny Los Cabos, Mexico instead of flying 6 hours to cold, snowy NJ.... smile125.gif

hey love & welcome to the forum...

i would reccomend a hotel complex that has activities for the children. Its important that the parents are able to relax and enjoy themselves because in turn your finance and you will. Im getting married at Dreams, Cancun. It's an all-inclusive resort that has many things for kids. They have an explorer's ship thing where they babysit your kids and a dolphin pool where they can go swimming with dolphins [for an additional charge-but at least they can see them]

the dreams website has a forum that you could become part of on it they have a lot of pictures. ~let us know what you choose to do~

Here is my advice....

1. Dreams Tulum is wonderful. I may be a little biased though (check our photos and wedding review).

2. I would find a way to ensure that the MIL got a 38 hour flight with 4 connections (maybe even a connection in Europe somewhere??) to set her straight. Like Ann said.... it's your wedding. Do what you want and let everyone else deal with their own shit in whatever way they have to. Are they paying for anything? If yes, tell them that you appreciate it but it is still your wedding. If not, tell them politely to f##k off and leave your wedding planning to you. Can you tell yet that I am having a bad morning? When we got married, we went alone to avoid all of that and to make sure that our wedding day was about nothing but us. Selfish? Yes! But in the best way possible.

Rant over yet? Not quite...... I agree 100% with Ann that people have no right to try to dictate how YOUR wedding day should be. At the same time, anyone getting married has the responsibility to stand up for themselves and do what is right for them. Of course family is important and not every decision should be made in a cut-throat selfish manner and certain needs of guests need to be taken into consideration. But come on.

I say call her bluff if need be and do whatever you feel is right for you. 5 hour flight with a connection? Tough shit MIL, deal with it if you want to see your SON get married. 2 hour ride from the airport? Tough shit, have a beer during the ride to the hotel. Too hot, too cold, too far, too many bugs, etc, etc, etc, well you get the idea.

Please don't take this as me coming down on you. If anything I am trying to be like the Tony Robbins motivational speaker of destination wedding planning and trying to help you do whats right for you. After the reception party is over and all the guests have slipped into an all-inclusive booze filled slumber, you NEED to be able to hug each other and say that it was the best day of your life. Your wedding day is the one day that should be all about the two of you celebrating the start of a wonderful married life together. It is not a day to worry about if Aunt Mary is happy with her meal, or what Uncle Fred thinks of the resort.

Wow. Long post. Getting sleepy. Eyes are getting heavy.

Hope I helped out some.

Wow that was some post. Loved it, especially the 38 hr flight idea and the Tony Robbins part. I'm envisioning him now in my head talking to a group of brides! LOL
