If they insist on a party, why not suggest a dinner party where all the guests bring is food and a recipe... that way you don't have to get gifts you dont want AND your FMIL doesnt have to spend any money (bc the guests are bringing the food!)

I just think you need to be honest with her. Like others said what if you just tell her that you and you close friends (BM and MOH) go out for a yummy dinner and drinks. Would she be satisfied with that. Afterall it is your wedding, hopefully she would understand and do what you want.

i didnt want one either. but it was like a runaway train i couldnt stop. we settled on a dinner out. with beer. just a few friends. i dont have any family here so i was only fending off friends. no relatives. id just tell her youre not comfortable with it but sometimes its easier just to give them the little stuff and move on.
