Start with finding a good travel agent who specializes in destination weddings. When you contact them try and have a price point for the trip cost and then they will be able to start recommending resorts based upon that.

@@aeisenberger Congrats and welcome!

Absolutely a good travel agent is your first place to start. If you have to "interview" more than one, then do that. You need to be completely comfortable with your TA.

Do you know what country you want to get married in? Do you have a budget? Do you have an approximate price point for your guests? Do you know what time of year you want?

A travel agent will guide you through all of these things then work with you to put together options that will fit with what you have in mind - your don't wants just as much as your wants. Once you have a location in mind, you will need to find out if your date is available. Sometimes an agent can help you with that, others will allow you to work through that with the resort yourself. That's your foundation. From there you will begin to put small details together with the resort but the bulk of finalizing your details won't happen until about 3 months before your wedding.

Are you sending save the date cards? Do you know how many people you want to invite? Generally, the rule of thumb is that for however many you invite, attendance will usually be in the 50% of that number range. Some brides have seen it be both higher and lower than that. Do you want to send invitations? Do you want a wedding website?

A lot of things to consider, but definitely spend some time reading through the site. You can enter different things into the search bar at the top and then read what comes up. The ladies here are very helpful and you'll get tons of ideas and suggestions.

You don't say if you're in the US or canada, but the owners of this site are destination wedding specialists and can work with brides on both sides of the border. I've attached their link below.

Thank you ladies for the great advice. I will definitely take them in consideration when I start planning. We are looking to get married August 2017 in Aruba. I would love to go to Punta Cana but its hurricane season and I want to be guaranteed some good winter...lol.

@@aeisenberger Welcome and congrats! I can totally understand not knowing where to start!

Aruba looks so pretty! I've always wanted to go!

After figuring out the location, I looked into all inclusive resorts. I knew around how many people we were planning to invite (I cheated, I send out holiday cards every year, so I had an idea of my guest list - also a good way to get people's addresses). For me, an all inclusive was important because I knew my guests would be flying out to the wedding, basically making a vacation out of it, and I wanted them to get the most of it.

My FI, BEFORE we were even engaged had also told, like everyone that we were planning a DW. Which at the time, I was not so pleased about, but in retrospect, it gave our potential guests some time to plan as well.

After finally settled on a hotel (and getting engaged), I contacted the resort directly and spoke to the wedding coordinator and secured our date/signed our contract. I did not get a travel agent until I was ready to negotiate a room block.

Good luck on planning!
