Wedding Baggage Fees

Has anyone tried emailing the airlines and seeing if you could get any accommodations since you are heading to your wedding. I am specifically concerned about the baggage fees. At $25 a bag it could get pretty pricey. Which has me leaning towards flying Southwest where I would get 2 free bags each. 

 

I want to fly non-stop though and currently Southwest is not flying direct from Philadelphia to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Has anyone heard of them potentially flying non-stop any time soon. Or of any of the big airlines waiving baggage fees since it is your big day?

I have not heard of any airlines waiving fees. We spent a couple hundred dollars checking bags ...it is what it is I guess. You could try asking but doubtful. If money an issue would consider southwest and having to have a stop

@@JamaicaNicole.......I live in Delaware (transplant from Philly) and Philadelphia airport is closer to me but I decided to drive to BWI because of the direct southwest flights.   Also, the flights are cheaper out of BWI.  

 

I have never heard of any airlines waiving fees for any reason.   The baggage fees are their money maker.   I would see if it is worth it to you to fly out of BWI.

If you plan to travel in the next few months, you might be able to earn status with an airline. I regularly travel with United, so I will be Premier Gold by the end of the year, which will allow me and a companion (ie fiance) to have 2 bags each that are up to 75 lbs each, therefore we can check up to 300 pounds for free between the two of us

All I could suggest is maybe upgrading to first class or asking for an upgrade for free/reduced cost as you are the bride/groom -- first class generally yields more free baggage.

 

Also ensure you know your carry on limits and push that as far as you can. Ie I had a large weekender bag and a roller suitcase as my 2 items. No one stopped me. We did that for everyone in our family. Even some friends did it (especially ones who didn't check bags!)

@@JamaicaNicole I honestly never heard of them waiving fees due to occasions But a good idea i just read on with a past bride was taking down all her favors and some decor in boxes. So you only pay the fee once heading to the destination.When your there , toss the boxes and don't have to worry about bringing back suit cases for another fee. hope that may help you a bit.

We had suitcases that fit inside eachother so we did that on the way back. Truth be told all I had was one less cause the dirty laundry took up so much room and I stuffed my dress in one.

Not sure if this is an option for you, but we are flying Caribbean Airlines into Montego Bay. They had the lowest ticket price and 2 free checked bags!

I fortunately got married before the airlines began charging for check-in luggage -- which is good because I literally brought 15 bags to my destination wedding LOL 

 

But we only were able to do that because we were traveling with 20 other relatives and I checked in at least 1 bag under each person's name -- back then each person could bring 2 free bags (the good ol' days!!!). Since you're traveling internationally, there may be some airlines that allow 1 or more free bags and if so, it may be good to start asking close friends or family if they'd be willing to bring one of your bags

I brought my stuff in boxes...you can get way more in a standard moving box than a suitcase plus we only brought one box back with us and tossed the others. Con is you get more scrutiny and they are bulky. DHs mom was annoyed bc we made her bring one.

 

You might want to check before opening an airline card. I opened an AMerican airlines card specifically to get free checked bags come to find out in small print domestic only
