Thailand Elopement Anyone!?

Well our wedding has taken a complete unexpected 180... My FI and I have decided to elope and get married on a Beach and explore the Beautiful islands of Thailand! There were so many things working against our wedding in Mexico. It  was becoming a huge stress, not only to us, but to our friends and families. My 3 year old nephew was just diagnosed with Leukemia, so we just didn't feel right about planning a joyous event. Not to mention, I couldn't get married without my sister and her kids there. We were hearing complaints from people and we just knew it was causing a lot of problems for some people. Our departure date was changed on us, which changed our wedding date (after we already sent out our invitations).. so frustrating.

So, the other day we got talking and decided to go on a month long excursion to South East Asia and get married in Thailand while we are there! We are both so relieved and excited by this decision!!  We plan on going this November. Neither of us have been to this area of the world, so this will be such a romantic and exotic adventure! We plan on having a small AHR when we return and show everyone a slideshow of our trip!

I only have 5 months to research and plan this trip, so if anyone has been to Thailand, I would love any information and recommendations to a romantic, secluded, beautiful area where we can have our intimate ceremony. Typically all we need is a photographer, flowers, a nice resort to stay for 3 nights with a salon for hair/makeup, someone to marry us, and a small boat so we can explore.

This is the most excited I have felt about the planning process, so I know we made the right choice :D

@@Victoriabride Aww i'm so glad you've landed on an idea that really gets you both excited. You will have such a fantastic time and you will remember it forever! I did a month long Asia trip with my family when I was a teenager and it was by far my favorite trip that I've ever been on (I've travelled a lot of the word and this still stands out as my favorite trip).

I'm sorry to hear about your nephew. That is never easy news to take in. I hope everything gets better and that he will get back to being healthy in no time. Eloping just the two of you will be a great escape in this tough time. Good luck with the planning!

Wow! That's definitely a big "change" decision, but if it's what makes both of you happy, then it's a good decision! You're so right - destination weddings aren't the easiest things in the world to deal with. You can get so many "forces" involved that can pull you in several different directions at once. That's so sad about your little nephew. Positive thoughts and prayers for the little guy.

My sister in law has done I think two trips to Thailand and she specifically mentioned Phuket. Apparently it is some of the most spectacular beach anywhere in the world. She's a flight attendant and I'm not sure of her schedule, but I'll try and get in touch with her and see if there is anywhere that she would recommend. That's where the huge tsunami was on the day after Christmas in 2004 but I've read that a very large part of it has rebuilt. It's a popular area with European tourists.

It all sounds like the trip of a lifetime, and to tie your wedding in to it as well is fantastic! I hope you stay and keep us posted on the details as you work through them! And for something like this I would absolutely recommend getting a travel agent!!

I am so sorry to hear about your nephew. That is such tough news but I pray the best for him and he will be in my thoughts. Hugs to all of you.

Wow!! I think you will have the most fabulous experience and I'm so glad you and your fiancé came to this decision amidst all the stressors. My husband toured Asia right after we met. He loved Thailand and really really wants to see Phuket. The photos are unreal. Actually he wants us to take our one year anniversary trip there in January!

I will ask him what books and such he used to plan his 7 week trip and get back to you. Congrats.

I'm really sorry to hear about your nephew, that must be tough and I agree that it would be hard planning a wedding given the circumstances. I think you guys have found a great compromise and you'll love Thailand. I don't think I have ever spoken to anyone who didn't like it there.

People think DW are easier to plan but I truly disagree. They're just as stressful.

I don't have any info on Thailand, but I think the best thing is to contact the TA that you were working with perhaps? or any other TA that does trips to Asia. I think you can get a lot of valuable info that way. They usually have an idea of which are the best deals for staying places, traveling between islands, etc. That's what I would do at least.

best of luck!

Ah we are possibly going to honeymoon in Thailand so have done some research . Phuket is beautiful but I heard it is too touristy now. There are other less crowded islands for example we were thinking about Ko Samui

So sorry to hear about your nephew. Eloping sounds like a great idea under the circumstances and you've picked an awesome location to do it.

My FI and I spent 3 weeks in SE Asia (China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam) back in 2012 and it was amazing trip. We've visited lots of places all over the world and that trip was our favourite hands down.

We jam packed a lot of cities in our Asia trip so unfortunately didn't get to visit the beaches there, but if you have any questions about the big cities in the area, places to see, modes of transport, anything at all - just ask!
