Veryvalero's Wedding Planning Thread - Grand Sunset Princess

Recommended Posts

I didn't change my name when Doug and I got married. After coming out of a long very nasty marriage, I went back to my maiden name. I had been under someone else's thumb for so long it was like I needed to get back to point A. I spent 16 weeks in a program for women in abusive situations and realized that I needed to find me again. I didn't start to date for more than a year after the ex and I split but it took that long for me to be comfortable in my own skin again. I had to go back to liking being me. Believe me ladies, it's a lot of work. I think Doug might have been just a little disappointed, and I might still at some point change it. But even after as many years as we've been together (14 now) there is still the fear that something will go wrong so in some ways I think keeping my name is also a form of self protection lol  On top of that his last name is dutch and hard to pronounce so it's also easier to stick with mine!

I never thought I would change my name and my fiance does not care at all what I do, but I am going to. I am going to change my middle name officially to my maiden name (I never cared for my middle name so...good riddance!) And if we have children their middle name will be my maiden name. I can't let go of my name completely! Fortunately his last name is phonetic, 2 syllables and moves me up in the alphabet from S to H. Haha.

We work for the same company though so I may keep my maiden name at work. We work with some of the same people occasionally and I'd rather they see me as an individual professional.

  • 2 weeks later...

Still recovering from my second degree burns - but I'm doing way better than I was last week.  I decided to star tackling the little things on the to-do-list that I have been avoiding.

The FI and I are so excited because we finally came up with the music for the ceremony.  We are huge music fans and it's hard to pick tracks for such a special day that aren't too cheesy and commercial.  We were avoiding any typical wedding songs.

These are our choices:

Pre-ceremony while guests arrive

Sea of Love -  Cat Power

Us - Regina Spektor

Amber- 311

Bridal party entrance

Fools Rush In - Ingrid Michaelson

Bride Grand Entrance

Song for Zula - Phosphoresent

Bride and Groom Grand Exit

Home - Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros

I'm missing a song for the signing of the papers but I will keep adding to this list.  We were listening to our songs last night and totally felt rush and excitement.

Aw I love it that you guys are so much into music! I haven't heard of those songs but I'll look some of them up when I'm home :)

I live under a rock so I don't know much about music or artists or anything. It kinda sucks sometimes haha. I'm recruiting one of my MOH's to help me out with the music because she's good at it :D. She planned the music for her sister's wedding and it has been one of the best weddings I've been to!

This was definitely a fun part of the process.  I love those heartfelt songs that make you feel things!

I love the music from Sleeping at last.  They have been featured in several episodes of Grey's Anatomy and I found that their music really makes you "feel" the episode.

They did a few covers that I'm a huge fan of...here's one of them

I love to dance so I know what you mean about songs that make you feel things ;). It's just that every time i start thinking about songs I get overwhelmed and I don't even know where to begin ahah. I do need to start tackling this though because the feeling will only get worse as time goes by. My plan is to have the "must" songs and then have my MOH fill in with her music. We do agree on a lot of songs so I'd even be comfortable telling her to make up the whole playlist because I know i'd love it lol. I just don't want to create too much work for people.

Are you using an ipod to play your music there?

We are going to use an iPod - thank you for reminding me that I def need to start settting that up.

My only issue is that our guests are split with some that only speak English, a few that speak both English and Spanish, and then a crowd that only speaks Spanish.  So I'm going to let the FI pick some Spanish songs to so we can have a nice balance.

Can't wait to hear your music picks.

Your wedding is a week after mine and you're far ahead of me in planning! I'm envious ^_^

The music organization is to be led by my fiance (he used to DJ) but to him June is still SOOOO far away so I have a hard time getting him to take it seriously. I can get bits and pieces of his attention to get feedback on MY projects, but he is clearly not ready to take anything on himself yet. He hasn't even given any thought to what he is going to wear or what kind of ring he wants. I've accepted he will be of no help close to the wedding because he'll be doing all his tasks last minute. Ah!

Awww, I'm sure you are right where you need to be.  Trust me, there are a lot of brides on this forum whose weddings are months after mine and they are way ahead of where I am at.  I've decided that I'm not going to compare myself to others because all our processes are so unique and part of the fun is to enjoy the journey.

my FI used to throw parties for a living so he's very much leading the way as well with the planning but he has yet to make his appointment for his suit fitting or his wedding band.  lol
