Unconventional Ways Of Doing Reception?

Recommended Posts

That is great @@Mangosong! Thanks for the description! We were at a wedding this weekend and I discussed this idea with my fiance and his sister-in-law. She had been to a wedding where they did the cocktail hour first and she said it worked great! That it was nice because, like you said, you got to have a little something to eat and it made the day feel very festive.

I was thinking the other benefit for us is I wanted a steel drum band to play as the guests arrive and for our walk down the aisle - and then also for the cocktail hour. If we do the cocktail hour after the ceremony then I'm paying them to do nothing during the ceremony. But if we do cocktail hour first, then they can play through the beginning of the ceremony and so I could pay them for less total time.

We don't have to decide for awhile since we are still 7.5 months out, but I'm loving this idea. Thanks for mentioning it!

We have recently decided to have the cake right after the ceremony in conjunction with the cocktail hour.

I have never been a big fan of the cake cutting portion of the evening.  I feel like it's hard to catch people's attention at that point.

Right after the ceremony the cake will definitely be welcomed and I think it would be a nice time to have it.

We are doing some traditional parts and completely cutting out others.

I'm still undecided about if my FI and I will see each other before the wedding. I love pictures so I'm worried that starting the pictures after my 530pm wedding may not give us enough light. (I'm not sure what time sun sets since I haven't been to Mexico during the month of July before.) My dad will walk me down and give me Away. At the end of the ceremony we will have our first dance and father daughter dance on the beach.

I think this will be the perfect way for me so I'm done with being the centre of attention early on so I can relax and enjoy my evening :)

We will take out pictures then go to our reception where we have decided to remove the head table and have everyone sit together. We aren't a big group so everyone will fit at 1 table. Once the meal is done we will cut and serve the cake. We won't be doing the garter toss or the flower toss since I don't enjoy either and we would only have 2-3 guest to catch it.

I love the idea of doing father/daughter mother/son at the same time! I doubt my FI will go for it but I'm def going to suggest it. With the reception itself only being 3 hours, I don't want to take up too much time doing 'formal' reception things. A garter and bouquet toss is not my thing, but I would like to do entrances and speeches.

I tried pitching the dance all together idea too! I thought it was really cool but my FI shut it down real quick!

P.S. @@Lia33 I miss you my fellow VIM'er! I hope the wedding planning is going well!

@@MrsCtoB Hi!!! I'm finally checking in on here again lol Planning is going well, sending out invitations on Tuesday :-) Your wedding is coming up! AHH!

By the way, I'm liking the idea of of cake during cocktail hour....just wondering if maybe people may not want their cake before their dinner, i don't know, but it sounds nice! Is everyone's reception 4 hours? I noticed one person is having 3 hour reception, I wonder if since I'm doing less of the traditions during reception if it may be good to shorten it to 3 hours instead of 4?
