Reception Music

Has anyone skipped a DJ at their reception and used the Music DJ app? Or an iPod? I was thinking of bringing an iPad and speakers. Anyone else done this?

My sister got married in Mexico last year and just hooked the iPod up to the speakers - no DJ. It worked well because she was able to pick all of the songs she wanted played and she saved a ton of money. The only thing to think about is having someone keep the flow of the reception going without the DJ to MC. So, if you have special dances, cake cutting, etc. that you want to take a break in the action for you'll want someone to help keep those things on track throughout the night. I did this for my sister's wedding, but we did speeches during dinner and then she did dad/daughter and first dance immediately after dinner before everyone started dancing so we were pretty much able to let the iPod play after that. 

 

I'm pretty sure we're doing this as well for our wedding. My fiancé used to DJ and we have turntables in our living room - so he will probably mix all the music ahead of time to play on an iPod (he did the playlist for my sister's wedding as well). We just know what our group likes to dance to so we aren't sure we want to relinquish control. Unless we get too busy before the big day that it is too big of a feat to accomplish, then we may suck it up and go with a DJ

That is my main concern of if I don't have a DJ…the fact that someone will have to be in charge of keeping everything going. Plus I do not know how many of our guests are really party on their own without any encouraging going on. I think a DJ will be a big help for this!

Yeah - it may be worth it for your peace of mind! We know our crew is a bunch of crazy dancers!

I'm soooo torn. My reception is only for 3hrs, so I figured i could get away with skipping the DJ, I just don't want to be in charge of the iPod, and feel bad delagating that to someone else...

@@palmtree99 I am skipping the DJ and just brining an ipod.  Ours too is only 3 hours long and part of that includes dinner.  I will be doing separate playlists: ceremony, background dinner music, first dances and then dance party.  There are plenty of DJ apps etc, so I am sure you create your playlist ahead of time and have all the songs lead into the other. We have a buddy who likes to make playlists this way, so we will give him a list of songs and have him put it together.

@@cometgirl I'm happy to know I'm not the only one not doing a DJ! I plan on downloading a bunch of apps to see which one I like best. There's got to be a good one out there.

Just make sure that wherever your reception is has wifi incase those apps need an internet connection. My fiancé has one that once the music is 'uploaded' he can play them without wifi but to use the radio station type portion of the app makes you need wifi.

I never thought of that!! So happy you said this, would be awful if the app i had ready to go wouldn't work at the reception due to no wifi. Thanks!

I was thinking about just using an iPod for music as well but trying to figure out if we would still do introductions into the reception. I guess we could ask a guest to introduce the bridal party? Are other people still doing introductions or just skipping that?
