Hurricane Season In Mexico/jamaica

Hi everyone!

I am trying to find a good time to get married in the summer. The time I would like is July/August. I am nervous about going too late in August and I want to see if a lot of people have gotten married during these times in Mexico or Jamaica. Obviously I know no weather is guaranteed anywhere, but it sounds like a brides worst nightmare. Since I am a teacher, I want to get married in the Summer. Please can you tell me your thoughts/information. Thanks!

May - November is hurricane/rainy season so you are always taking a risk when you go during that time. For a lot of brides, it turns out great but you are always taking that gamble that it may rain the whole week or a hurricane *may* hit. More often than not, it does not but then you have for instance that hurricane that hit in Cabo a few weeks back.

The Atlantic hurricane season is actually June 1 - November 30.  Eastern Pacific hurricane season is May 15 - November 30. August/September/October are the most active months. I would highly recommend anyone traveling to the caribbean during hurricane season get cancel for any reason travel insurance. 

 

For example: we got married on Nov 5th. Mexico didn't have any hurricanes, BUT NYC did - Hurricane Sandy. Some of our guests weren't able to make it to Mexico because of a hurricane in NY. That wasn't anything we expected... 

 

The silver lining on the hurricanes is you usually have some warning where they are headed. Not exact, and they can change direction, but you should know before your departure if a hurricane has developed and is headed for that area. Some seasons are very active, and some (like this year) aren't very active at all. Hope for the best...prepare for the worst.

Or does anyone know of other islands besides aruba to avoid hurricane season. I read somewhere about DR? I feel like all the others are expensive.

Hey @@lornj29 the Jamaican hurricane season is late August to mid October, or there about. It doesn't mean they'll definitely be rain. I've been during hurricane season before, and weather was wet, but not all day... it would run and then dry up. July in Jamaica is hot, but probably less likely to rain!!! Hope that helps :-) :-)

If you aren't willing to take the hurricane chance, then you won't want to plan on a wedding in the caribbean from July - November. DR is in the caribbean, thus there's the chance of a hurricane. 

 

Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire are much further south, so they typically aren't impacted by hurricanes. Puerto Rico, DR/Haiti, Jamaica, Bahamas, FL Keys, Virgin Islands, Mexico (Cancun and Cabo) Turks & Caicos, even Bermuda have a chance of a hurricane in summer. Heck, even NC, SC, GA and up the eastern coast have a chance of a hurricane in those months. 

 

It's minimizing the risk - July is much less likely than August...

Hi @lornj29 - My fiance is from Jamaica and we are getting married there in June 2015. While hurricane season is June - October, Jamaica hasn't actually had a hurricane in like 15 years. They may affected by a tropical depression, but there is no predicting and it isn't likely.

 

We were just there in May for 9 days and, no exaggeration, it rained cats and dogs ALL day every day. His family members claim that May and October are the rainiest months, but that varies a little bit from what you'd find if you searched average rainfall by month for Jamaica. It may have been a fluke, but we hadn't picked our date yet and I decided then there was no way I was getting married in May! February - March are more expensive and we couldn't get the date we wanted in April, so we went with June. It may rain, but we know we'll have a blast anyway!

@@lornj29 Just a suggestion because hurricane season is kind of during the summer - what about chirstmas break or spring break? Would you consider that?
