If you do switch though, take a look at Now Sapphire. We found their packages very reasonable, and you can bring your own decorations for little to no fee. So far the only decoration fee we're being charged for is chair bows - $1/bow, versus $5/bow if we used the resort's.

you should price out your resort you are going to for your friends wedding...and bonus you get a site visit

What about talking to the wedding coordinator at Mayan palace? Be upfront and tell them that you were going to be brining x amount of people, great business for them but you need them to work with you on some things. Tell them that you don't have a problem walking away from, you deposit and hopefully they try to work with you.
