Save The Dates And Invitations?

Recommended Posts

This question is rather Canadian-specific because of the way our packages are structured. We're planning a wedding for Nov 2015, but we haven't set a date yet because the airlines haven't released their schedules that far out and I can't get rates yet. I don't want to pick a date and then find out that we could have saved a couple hundred bucks a person by going a week earlier.

My question is this: When do you send STD and Invitations? From what I've been gathering, once your travel agent blocks off the rooms, you usually have a month to put down a deposit, then three months or so to pay the balance? If we're booking a year out, do I send the STD cards with rough dates, then send the actual invitations a year out once we get the rates in place so that people can start putting their deposits down?

I think sending a save the date with a rough date then invitations later on is a good idea. At least this way people will start thinking and planning for the wedding, rather than having to make a quick decision if they can come or not once the prices are out. Hope that helps!

@@kellymiller and then our guests would know whether they can expect a plus one based on who the std is addressed to, was my thinking.

Are you not offering all your guests a plus one?  I did because the single supplement was a couple hundred dollars more!  Which isn't that attractive to guests who focus solely on price point.  Just a thought.....     I also offered to help people 'bunk' up to save on that as well for those who didn't know someone to bring/couldn't find someone.

We are, but they wouldn't know that yet.

Sorry I think I totally read your sentence wrong - I read it more as 'some will get it, some won't, so this way they will know'

I think it is a nice gesture with a destination wedding to keep their costs down.  Of course it's personal preference. We talked about this in another thread awhile back! As of course once you open that door you will probably have people at your wedding you don't know!

I apologize if my question came out wrong, when I read it back it sounds 'snarky'... wasn't my intent.

We only have I think 5 single people coming, so plus ones aren't a big deal. I have three single siblings and he has one, plus my parents are divorced and my father hasn't remarried.  Now we just have to hope that his brother doesn't end up getting back together with his high maintenance killjoy ex and my sister doesn't end up hooking up with some sleazebag by then!

Ahh ok! I totally understand and truth me told, my single friends who couldn't find a 'date' paid the single supplement and didn't bother to bunk up. I would have personally bunked up for numerous reasons (price, safety, etc).

OHHH I think we can all relate to comments about sleazebags and high maintenance people.  I am a little worried about my sister and her boyfriend, but as I said above - I opened that door!   It will all turn out! Glad you picked a resort and are moving ahead with planning :)

We did invites at 20 months out (boarding pass) as soon as we secured our rates/package for our 2/2016 wedding. We didn't bother with save the dates since we wanted to get people booking ASAP. Our RSVP date was the same as our booking deadline.

Now that we are 3 weeks from our RSVP deadline, I am sending postcards that remind people to go to our website and RSVP. The website is being updated as info is available and is our main form of communication (package pricing etc),

Everyone was given a plus one... Though our truly single are booking alone. (They didn't bother bunking up- and paid the supplement)

For us we had 90 days to put down deposits to get our rate so we had invites ready to go as soon as we got the nod from our T/A and we felt 90 days was plenty enough time for people to reply.

I have also been thinking about end of nov.2015 as well, do you know when the flight info comes out???

Just recently engaged so haven't really done much research yet, but was on this website a lot before making an account and now engaged and excited to get this going!

I've been invited to many destination weddings and all of my Canadian bride friends have done it differently and it all worked out great for us that went.  Some skipped the save the dates but had a facebook group/event with rough dates and then updates and later the formal invite once flight info came out.., or a wedding website or emailing everyone(which seemed like a lot more work).
