With all these cool DIY things to print out, I would like to do some on my own - we don't have a printer but were looking to buy one. Preferably the cheaper we can get with decent quality- any recs that have worked well for you?

Do you tend to end up blowing through a lot of ink doing it yourself? did you find it easier to go to kinkos?is it hard to print things like labels and iron on transfers?

thanks!

Canon make excellent printers. We have 3 and do a lot with them - photos, documents. I've just done samples of my door cards, our key holder card and the little tags I want to add to maracas. So far so good, and I used 110lb cardstock. The printer handled it all ok with just holding on to the edge of the cardstock to ensure it feeds properly. I don't know yet if it will be heavy on ink, but with all the photos we print and other stuff, I don't find it's hard on ink at all.

I have a canon pixma and it's held up great. It's by no means an expensive printer either. I used cardstock and did all my invites and they looked impressive for an inkjet. And it's not empty yet! I've done all my projects on it.

The only thing I may print at staples is the brochures as they are double sided and lots of ink so laser printer may work better.

That's what mine is too. Canon Pixma and yep - I've done quite a bit and the cartridges do last quite a while. A word of caution.....  Try to buy and use the Canon ink. If you go and buy the no name stuff, you'll void your printer warranty immediately and if anything goes wrong, you're stuck.

But I've had no trouble with mine at all and it's about 6 years old now. I buy my ink at Sam's Club in the US because the prices are good, but you can absolutely buy at Costco, or even Walmart as long as you buy the Canon ink.

The only think I found with the cardstock so far is that the colours are off just slightly, and I think it's because the cardstock takes so much more ink. My shades are just a smidgen darker than what I expected but nothing that I'm upset about at all.

My Epson is awesome, We got it for FI's home business and knowing we were going to print a bunch of stuff for wedding and after. It's built to print high quality pictures and does really well.
