To Ask Bridesmaids Before Or After Rsvp

I asked my best friends and sister to be in the wedding before I sent out the invitations.   I even asked them all if doing a destination wedding would be possible for everyone before I event made it definite.  There just were some people I couldn't get married without being there.  I asked my friends over our celebration of my engagement dinner.  I made each girl a box with all sorts of things inside representing our friendship.

This is a tough one! I would ask before, but also let them know that there is no pressure to attend! 

I have one best friend that I know is attending and will be a bridesmaid and another that I am not sure will be able to make it. If she is unable to attend the wedding, she will play a major role in our reception when we return! This way she still gets to play a 'bridesmaid' role and be by my side.
