What's funny is that our own backyards can be more dangerous! I haven't had those comments ... Yet ....

I've never been sick anywhere *knock on wood* but bring all the good to help just in case. Am slightly worried about my kids but can happen anywhere

Yeah, she was talking about that explosion at a resort a few years back, but buildings explode in North America all the time. The grade school I went to had blown up years before I went there.  A department store blew up in my hometown due to a gas leak. It's not like these things are limited to Mexico. It's like saying that Oklahoma isn't safe because someone planted a bomb in front of a federal building once!

Hi there. I'm sorry to hear your family is giving you a hard time - I can relate :(

I will give you the advice my fiance's parents gave us: do what's best for you. I know it stinks to not have some of the people you love there with you but at the end of the day, THEY are making the decision not to come. THEY are doing what's best for them. So why should you have to compromise what you want? That's not fair to you.

I am dealing with something very similiar with my fiance's aunt. She thinks she is going to be killed by Mexican drug lords (lol!) and refuses to come. And since she looks after my fiance's grandma, it means she won't come either. Now I can respect her decision, but she makes it very awkward because she won't even acknowledge the wedding is happening.

Good luck! I know it can be rough.

I think this is one of the most (if not the most) annoying things about people not coming. We don't mind you aren't coming, but you don't have to pretend we aren't getting married. We still want you to be involved in some regard, we still want to talk to you about it, we still want you to share in our excitement..... I wonder if they feel so bad they act this way? This is VERY common after all the postings on this board.

i think it is funny that people are so scared of mexico- i have been so many times and every time have felt amazingly safe. ironically yesterday i heard gunshots outside my apt and I live in a big city in the US! feels much more dangerous here!

I totally agree. I also live in a big city where a lot of things happen!

But the media loves to bash Mexico in the news any chance they get.  People should realize stuff happens everywhere.

I also feel that you need to be smart and keep yourself out of trouble. YES there is a lot of crime in Mexico- but you can do your part as a guest in the country to keep yourself away from most of it. If you leave your resort, wander the back streets of downtown cancun looking for drugs to spice up your holiday- chances are you may meet some unsavoury people who may not have your best interests at heart.

We travel a TON- and have taken out kids practically everywhere with us. Being alert, smart and respectful goes a long way when in a foreign environment. Many of the incidents that occur with tourists in Mexico (or elsewhere) are often a result of someone ignoring these simple rules.

I respect the decision of some who may not want to come due to their own fears, but I do NOT understand those that project those fears onto us, or fellow travellers expecting us to drop our plans and cater to their lack of experience/knowledge. Luckily we haven't had anyone tell us to our faces that they won't come because it's mexico- but we have heard rumblings that my FI's brother was excited to book (and be a groomsman) until his wife said she would NEVER go there. I guess we will see!

I also think that people will come to their senses and have a good time when they get down there. I know my aunt has been grumbling about going bc she doesnt like to travel,  but i think shell have a blast

Exactly, we didn't have anyone not book either due to location.  A lot of my fiance's side has never been on an all inclusive trip, so they have quite a treat in store for them!!
