Akumal Beach Resort; Any Experiences?

Recommended Posts

This is the first place i started looking at. Akumal sounds great. The resort is older & not as fancy as some other places, but it sounds really nice. If you are looking for laid back & more peaceful, this might be a good place for you.

I think the reason why I picked a different place was that their wedding package was more expensive & the drive from the airport would be over an hour. It sounds like the kind of place I'd want to stay at on another trip though & might be a good choice for your wedding. the hotel is long so all rooms are along the ocean. I'll dig up some of my old info when i was thinking about having my wedding here.

OK I found my notes. For Pros I had good location, good price, good food, nice atmosphere and a good hotel WC. For cons I had that the wedding package was $1000. That's typically for a legal ceremony, but since we are only doing symbolic I wanted something less. Other cons were they don't have a gazeebo, the rooms are not that nice (but they are well maintained) and the distance from the airport.

I also looked at Grand Oasis Akumal which does free weddings, but you'd have to make sure your guests did not book the jungle rooms. They have terrible reviews.

There is a lot more info on ABR on locogringo & tripadvisor.

Akumal Bay beach photo tour, aerial images

Here is an aerial view. I like how the hotel is all along the water so everyone is near the ocean. I also read that even when all the rooms are sold out, you can feel like the only people at the hotel. People who stay here are often out doing other things away from the hotel.

It's very close to yal ku lagaoon which is supposed to be a great place to snorkle.

Akumal: Akumal Beach Resort - Traveler Reviews - Dream Wedding at the Akumal Beach Resort - TripAdvisor

I'm going through all my book marked pages. I think this is the last of my information. Search "Akumal beach resort wedding" on trip advisor & some good information comes up. I contacted people through tripadvisor for more info. They sent lots of pictures, advice, etc. This was for a different hotel though.

OK last post I promise!

Here is one of the first posts I had on the forum when ABR was my top choice hotel. It's kind of funny to go back & read it, because I now "know" the people I was talking to then, but at the time they were strangers. It also feels like 10 years ago & it was only 3 1/2 months ago. Wow, I feel like I've been planning this wedding a long time!!!

Wow, THANK YOU Morgan!

I'm really interested in ABR because the prelim stuff I've read sounds a lot like my original choice....laidback, and low key but not five star or luxury, so it would fit the budget I have in mind for our guests.

I'm up and its 2:30 in the morning, so I am glad I logged in and seen your posts. This gives me uninterrupted time to check out all your info! Its just me, a cup of cocoa and General Hospital on Soapnet, so I'm on it! Thanks again. (I'm sure I'll be posting questions or whatever as I go along)

Hi Savannah,

We actually stayed at ABR, as it was one of the places I was very interested in. Honestly? I loved the idea but was unimpressed by the reality. I think that the place would really be wonderful if they invested a little time and energy in the details, but the rooms alone were enough to push us away. The room they put us in--and they knew that I was there as a potential wedding customer--reeked of mildew (and this was a "superior" room). I don't consider myself all that picky about things like that, but it was so bad and the bedding was so steeped in the smell that I could hardly sleep. There were other unappealing details, but the following encapsulates everything I disliked about ABR: they use the same arch for each wedding, and the flowers were plastic. You could get a florist or someone else to do it, but if you invite any outside vendors (photographer, florist, etc), they charge you $100 per vendor.

Their beach, however, was GORGEOUS. Really beautiful.

I can tell you about other places in Akumal, if you're interested. The town itself is absolutely lovely.

best,

-L

I cant believe no one has posted anything about this resort in a very long time. I have been looking at this location as my possible backup wedding spot. The WC has been really good about responding through email and the reviews on Tripadvisor seem promising. They sent me pics of the reception site which is under like a tiki area...and it was set up pretty nice. You wouldn't have to rent the dance floor since the space is perfect for that already. If anyone is interested, you can PM me and I can send you pics of the area. I like how it is affordable for the guests and there are many things to do around the area. The 1 hr drive from the airport is a bummer but once you are there it would be like paradise. Also, the beach location is protected since sea turtles are swimming constantly. It would make for some gorgeous pictures! Not too touristy and seems very laid back.
