Hi 2015 GPPC brides!

 

Question for those who got (or are getting) married with a legal ceremony in the DR. For the legal documents that you need to have translated into Spanish and bring with you to the DR, was the short form birth certificate the correct one or did you need to have a long form one? Just trying to get all my docs in order beforehand.

Hi @@Jc14! We had our documents translated at the DR Embassy. We brought both the long and short copies of our birth certificates, but they only needed the short one.  Other than that you'll need your passports and copies of your single status form (I've attached the example that the embassy sent me).

Hi @@Kerrierf that's good to know! I just got a copy of my short one (lost the original.. oops!) a month ago, then read online that I would actually need the LONG one! Glad I asked before ordering it! Thanks! 

 

Are you in Toronto? I know the DR consulate is downtown, not sure where there are others? I also found the DRSI which is north of the city - wondering if they are any cheaper yet still legit? How much did it cost to do it all at the embassy, if you don't mind my asking?

 

@@Meandhim Thanks for that! I know the symbolic ceremony is a great option, I just can't help but be swayed to do it legally in the DR though.. even though it is more expensive.

@@Jc14, I had lost mine too and had to re-order . As you never know when they'd come in handy, I ordered both the long and the short so that I have them on file.

 

I'm located in Ottawa, but I know the consulate in Toronto does the paperwork for you too.

 

In order to celebrate your wedding in the Dominican Republic the bride and groom will need to provide the following documents and they need to be authenticated by Foreign Affairs here in Ottawa.

 Valid Passport*

 Original or certified true copy of Birth Certificate long or short version (preferred) *  

 Single Status Affidavit. (Original and notarized) **

 Death or Divorce Certificate in original**

 Four witnesses over 18 years old. Two of them must not be relatives to the bride or groom ( hotel can provide them free, if necessary)

 Translation into Spanish of the Birth Certificate, Single Status Affidavit and Death or Divorce Certificate. ( Can be done at the Embassy for a fee)

 Legalization of the Single Status Affidavit, Death or Divorce Certificate by the Consular Section of this Embassy.

 

(*)  For legalization purposes at this Embassy, a notarized photocopy of your passport and Birth Certificate will suffice. The latter does not need to have your parent's name on it.  However, you must bring all your documents to the Dominican Republic, including those already legalized by us and their originals. 

 

** Translated into Spanish and legalized by this Embassy.

 

If you are able to sign your Single Status Affidavit at this Embassy you do not need to notarize your Single Status Affidavit with a Canadian notary. 

 

 

Legal Fees in USD:

The cost to translate a document is         40$ per document

The cost to legalize a document is          100$ per document 

Courier to Foreign Affairs                         50$  one time

 

 

This fee is related to:

 

40$ x 4 to translate both Birth Certificates and two Single Status Affidavit=160$.  

100$ x 2 to legalize two Single Status Affidavit= US100$, If any of you are not divorced or widowed, the total amount to pay to legalize and translate your wedding documents are $360.00 + 50$ (Foreign Affairs)USD = $410.00

 

On the other hand, if one of you is divorced or widowed, the person concerned should pay an additional US100.00 in order to legalize the Divorce or Death Certificate and US$40 for its translation into Spanish. Therefore, they will have to pay an extra US$140 per this document.  In order words, if either the bride or groom is divorced or widowed, the total amount to pay to legalize their documents will be US$500.00 + 50$ (Foreign Affairs) USD$; if both (bride and groom) are divorced or widowed, they will have to pay $640.00 + 50$ (Foreign Affairs) USD$

 

 

IMPORTANT NOTICE: 

Please take into account the following facts before legalizing and translating your documents or even planning your wedding:

 

1. Once your documents have been legalized by this Embassy, they will be valid only for three (3) consecutive months from the legalization date, so take this into consideration before sending your documents for legalization.

 

2. A divorced bride cannot get married until 10 months have passed after her official divorce date, unless her intended husband is the same person that she has been divorced. If this is your case, please keep in touch with us at 613 569 9893 ext 232 or 229, as there may be new legal changes on this matter on the Dominican Republic or  if your divorce decree or judgement had stayed that you has been legally separated for at least 10 months. In that case, the Civil State Officer in the Dominican Republic through your wedding coordinator, might take this condition into account and could give a waive to the divorced bride based on that fact. (Please contact your wedding coordinator or us to help you find out a solution to your special condition). If a waive is given, you will have to translate also your divorce decree or judgement in order to get married in the Dominican Republic because there it is proved that you have been legally separated from your divorced husband more than 10 months. 

 

3. If any of you had changed legally your names or last names, so that they will be different from the ones indicated on your birth certificate, you have to send that legal document to us for translation and legalization because your Dominican Marriage Certificate will come out on the name of the person indicated on the birth certificate, unless there is a legal document that change those names or last names for the bride or groom. If that it is your case please let us know ahead of time because there is an extra charge of US$140.00 US$ per this extra document.

When I was trying to decide between a symbolic and a legal ceremony I found most of the info here Dominican Republic Consulate Toronto...I think I calculated the total cost of Documents to be around 600-700 USD...but I may be wrong considering all I did was research I didn't actually go through with it.

Another question, I have read the 2013, 2014, and 2015 threads for this resort. Is any one time of year better or more recommended than others? We are thinking December of this year, but I see that April/May has been a very popular time to get married in the DR. Is this due to weather? Price?

We chose the first week of May because it's the first week after the main tourist season - which means the prices were a lot lower.  Sadly because we have a lot of family that work in the education sector, this timing means that they couldn't make it. It also means I can't take a summer semester for grad school (just things that you may need to consider). The prices might be higher in December, but the weather should still be nice (I'm guessing, but you'd have to look into it), and more people may have time off work depending on how many people you want there
