Did you end up talking to your friend about doing your photos?  We also asked a friend to do ours, we agreed to pay flight and accommodations.  After agreeing to it, she contacted us and said that her husband thinks she should be paid $500 on top of that, since technically she is working.  What was i supposed to do at that point, so we are paying it.

That's a tough one, yes she is working BUT you are paying her flight and accommodations!  It's tough being put in that spot, but I am glad you have your photographer!

So, based on this thread, I'm gathering that I'm looking at a cost of $1000 - $5000 (I assume USD) to hire a local photographer.

I know what you mean. I was quoted prices $5000 USD and beyond. For Canadians you also need to keep in mind of the exchange rates. Your $1500 USD package sounds ok, however, with your credit card's exchange rate you'll be paying around $2000 Canadian dollars or more.

You don't have to limit yourself to photographers in the Riviera Maya. Search for destination photographers in your city or country. You would be surprised to find better and more affordable options. For example our photographer Enrique from www.decordova.ca is from Toronto but also has residence in Playa del Carmen. My hubby from Montreal paid around $1600 Canadian and we did not have to exchange or pay for his flight. You can find fantastic deals like that if you open up your search area.

We did ask our friend, and we are very happy that he accepted. He had already put down a deposit to attend the wedding (with his wife), so we knew he was planning to be there.

Our approach was to let him know that we would love for him to photograph our wedding and what our budget was (based on researching rates of the local photographers). But also stating that we completely understood if he didn't want to be working on his vacation or if our budget was not within his range (since I have no idea what he normally charges). He let us know that he would love to photograph our wedding and that our budget would allow us 8 hours of his time - spread out however we wanted during the week. Our budget would have allowed 4 - 6 hours with local photographers, so we were thrilled with that! But I do feel like he is giving us a deal. We are not paying for flights/accommodations.

A couple of minors concerns are whether there will be any issue with him bringing his equipment into the country (need to let him know to bring the basics only) and also that he won't have an assistant so can't be in "two places at once" to capture moments in different locations or at different angles. But I'm sure it will all work out and that he will capture amazing memories for us. The photos will be even more special since we know him and I feel he will put us at ease.

Don't feel bad. I find it's generally one or the other from the local photographers I spoke with. You pay their way or you pay for their services.

The fella who did our engagement shoot wanted his package paid and and extra $500 spending money. That was for 8 hours. So was right in line with what we paid in Mexico but we had guarantees of his quality etc.

Since they were already coming and are obviously close friends I'm sure he feels privileged and is more than happy!

@@calgarybride2015 I think he would have given us a great rate even here at home - plus he is getting an awesome vacation with his lovely wife (and we help to offset his costs)!  :) I feel like we definitely got a deal though - more hours than the local photographers, no outside vendor fees (since he is a guest) and his rate is about $500 less than the per person cost for the resort & flight! It's worked out very well for us and we are very grateful.

Happy to read that worked out with your friend.  I should work on gaining a new skill like photography, hair styling, flower arranging so as to get some free trips on my girls' DWs. For now I just enjoy helping them in the planning, sharing my experience and opinion.
