First Step?

So, my fiance and I are starting to plan our Nov 2015 wedding in Mexico. What's the first step? Do you contact the resort for a date first, or talk to a travel agent first?

Thanks!

Congratulations! Once you have an idea of which resort and date, best bet is to contact a TA to help you coordinate and lock in a room/package rate for your guests as well as secure any bonus deals that may be bail able to you. Not sure if you are from Canada, US or elsewhere- but that all plays a factor in the planning.

This is a great place to gather info and share tips and ideas so you already made the great first step by coming here!

I agree with kmk2016, once you know what resort and an idea of the date contact a TA to help with securing the date and group rates!

Congrats and good luck planning!

Congrats and welcome to BDW! I'm going to go off track a bit with the other ladies and recommend a travel agent first! If you don't already know what resort you want, a TA can be the best person to help you with price ranges and additional bonuses that they have access to. Once you get a few resorts narrowed down, then you can definitely do your own research and narrow it down even further. The resort reviews on this site can be a big help.

@@kmk2016 is right about whether you are in the US or Canada. Packages are put together differently depending on where you are so that will also affect what your expectations are. The other thing a travel agent will help you with is your date if you don't know what time of year you want. You would consider hurrican season and high and low season for pricing. Obviously everyone generally will go for the January, February, March, April timeline just because it gets a lot of people away from winter and incorporates a vacation along with your wedding.

Lots of things to think about. Good luck and happy planning!

Thanks, Everyone.

My FH and I are from Canada and our guests will be coming from SK, ON and New York. I'm not sure how that complicates things for the travel agent, I guess the first step would be to find one. Would it be difficult for my guests from ON to deal with a travel agent based in SK?

I'm a Canadian bride as well and will say this: look at resorts you like and the wedding packages they offer. Get an image of what you want first, then contact an agent. The agent I worked with did not recommend any resorts we liked. Obviously they are professionals, and know which resorts are good to work with - but they are also incentivized and push certain ones. That's why I recommend defining in your mind first, what you want out of the resort. Prices were so much higher than I thought, and some resorts offer way better wedding packages than others. Some suppliers (like air canada, transat, westjet etc.) also offer their own incentives as well. We booked with air canada and receive "x" amount of free rooms if "x" ppl book. Your agent will help you choose the best supplier as well. I'm a travel professional myself so did a lot on my own first before contacting the agent we went with.

@@Maggietron I would for sure talk to a travel agent! Even if your not 100% on a resort they can help you. I don't know if its the same in Mexico as with Cuba [i am getting married in Cuba] but we needed to be in the country for 3 days prior to getting married and also they don't do weddings on the weekend! I wanted to get married Feb 22 but that was a Sunday and was going to be a pain in the butt to work that out so now we care getting married on the 25th instead! Good luck with your planing :)

@Maggietron  I don't think your guests will have a problem dealing with your travel agent wherever they are since almost all of their communication with the TA will be by email or over the phone. We have people coming out of Alberta, Ontario, and Florida so what my travel agent did was put together a group package through WestJet for our Alberta people (since that's where the majority are flying from), and a separate "land-only" package through Sunwing for the few that are coming out of ON and FL and they will just book their flight on their own. It was the easiest way to do it for us, even though we miss out on some extra "perks" through WestJet due to the fact that fewer people are booking through them.
