In an offhand way, many of my friends said they didn't think they a bridal shower would be appropriate since I am having a destination wedding.... has anyone else encountered this? And, is it selfish of me to be a little upset about this? I mean, granted it is asking a lot...buuuuut, I have spent a lot of money on their weddings (shower & wedding gifts and being in the bridal party), e-parties, bridal showers, bachelorette showers, and baby showers....

I'm going to have a shower, but I'm not expecting gifts. I just want to celebrate and play games! haha. I'm not going to say "no gifts" but I'm not expecting people to bring gifts. If they do, that's great, if not, it's no big deal.

Sure, I don't expect extravagant gifts or anything...I'd just like a get-together to celebrate this important step

We have had a few complain about not doing a wedding here actually it was mostly my mother , she has never been away and expects me to get married in her back yard like she did ....ya...right. I did tell her it's my wedding and this is what we want and who ever doesn't like it , don't come !!

Most of our guests are very excited and haven't stopped talking about it. We also got a good price 1500 for the week, I wanted it that way cause I know lots of our friends have new families and we would just love for them to make it. We plan on going someone more high end for honey moon. I think the wedding week we will be busy and won't be able to sit and relax much anyways more important for everyone to be there with us.

We really only invited people we wanted there, that's kinda nice about destination you don't have to invite everyone and their mother and mothers mother ect.

Many people have bridal showers even though they are doing a destination, some people even do jack and Jill's. Bridal shower is nice for family that can't make it to the wedding but can still celebrate with you.

My mother in law is throwing us a shower. I didn't expect her to do it but she wants to because most o her side of the family won't be making the trip. Now that it's drawing closer I'm excited about it!

We moved to a new state this year, and we're actually from different states originally, so everyone is scattered.  This is why we did a destination wedding int he first place haha.

I'm a little bummed because I don't think I'll be getting a wedding shower or bachelorette party, more bummed about the bachelorette party!  I threw my BFF one in Vegas in 2012, and it cost me as much as a mexican vacation...so I'm hoping they'll consider doing something for me :)  My sister (MOH)'s wedding in 2010 I spent well over 1200 getting to the wedding & throwing her a bachelorette party, and it was in our hometown & state!

I think if someone wants to throw you one, enjoy it! Seems like an awkward situation to ask someone to throw one though

I think it depends on key factors such as the bride & groom's financial situation, the invited guests financial threshold, etc.

I'm not too sure we are in the same situation as other brides, but us Chinese people don't do all-inclusive or Mexico. Out of all the invited guests (my family, fiance's family, our combined friends, etc.), 8 had been to an all-inclusive resort (100+ people). Out of all the guests that agreed to come, 5 out of 28 has been to Mexico/Caribbean. Of course, my fiance and I would LOVE to have our wedding in a grand expensive place, and we are willing to pay for it, but we have to think about why we are having a wedding in the first place -- we wanted to celebrate our wedding with our family AND friends.

Further, my family, fiance's family and our friends are not big travelers...the reality is that asking each guest to fork out $2,000+ is not reasonable for our situation (unless I miraculously win the Powerball or Lottomax jackpot).

Also, because we are based out of Vancouver, BC, the best bang for the buck for Riviera Maya packages are 7 night stays. Shorter duration (4-5 days) costs about $200 less. No point in offering shorter duration to guests at all!!

We wrote down a lists of guests that we really, really want them attending our wedding and we asked them the approx. price they are willing to pay just to get a feel for the threshold. After surveying the wanted-guestlist, we set our targeted amount to be $1,700 (including all tax, surcharges, 7 nights, flight) per person. We then settled on a resort that fits most of our criteria (the location we wanted, the resort amenities, the reviews, and the pricing).

There is always a pro and con to selecting whichever resort you pick, but ultimately it depends on the criteria you and your fiance set for your wedding.

  • 1 month later...

my fiance sister encouraged for us to have a destination wedding..so now that we booked it she isn't coming because she says she can't afford it which is BS.... she says we chose this knowing she isn't coming and we are selfish for thinking of ourselves....like WTF!
