Are You Changing Your Last Name, Hyphenating, Or Keeping Your Name

I'm a very independant person, and I'm almost positive I will be changing my name. He doesn't care either way. My mom never changed her name, and it always felt like it wasn't complete, as a family. Also, having to explain ALL the time that no, she does not share the same last name as me, and no, they are married.

 

We are starting a family, and I want us to be unified.

Call me old fashioned.....but I can't imagine me not taking my hubby's last name. He wouldn't care, but would be a little disappointed.

Yes you will lol. I don't have my kids last names and while it's generally a non problem it can be a huge one -- like traveling across the border!

Taking husbands last name, was uoset to not have my fathers last name (i have my mothers) so there is no cultural ties to my last name

I would want the children to have the same last name as me as well.  And as previously stated, when travelling, it certainly would make things a whole lot easier.

 

My mom shakes her head - these weren't even issues when she got married!

I am not changing my last name at all... I'm Laotian and it is very important to me to have that as my cultural identity

^^ This. This is is so important to me because I am Laotian. My middle and last name is the most important thing to me. It was my identity for the past 29 years.

 

I'm so glad my husband (haha, now I can say it) is supportive either way. I am still planning on changing my last name but I am going to try to find a way to make my middle name and maiden last name fit (I'm just going to make it into two middle names). Sadly, there's a 26-character limit with the social security office and I have already hit the 27 letters. I want to try to find a way to make that happen.

My last name and my fiancé's are nearly the exact same!! I'm only adding 3 letters to the end of mine

Haha, why do Lao people have to have the longest names ever? My husband has started calling our puppy Baxter Battenvong (a combo of his last name and mine) lol

I will take his last name. I'm just very traditional like that. I know he's really happy that I'm taking it but I think he would've been fine if I didn't. My maiden name and his name both start with L though, so all of the RBL stuff I've already owned can still be used and relevant!
