Will The Local Catholic Churches Permit Us To Marry In Their Chapel?

Recommended Posts

Neither my fiancé, nor I are Catholic... but we do want a church wedding and it seems all the churches are Catholic...

  1. Would the Catholic churches permit us to marry in their chapel?
  2. Alternatively, do you know of ANY other churches we would be welcome in?

It doesn't have to be Christian either... a temple, a chapel... any facility that lends the air of solemnity and stillness we are looking for.

Any guidance is most appreciated!

Congrats and welcome to the site! You'll definitely find tons of information here that will help you with your planning, and everyone is very willing to share!

That being said, you've asked a tough question that I absolutely don't know the answer to! Hopefully someone that has a bit more experience with that will be able to chime in and help out! You didn't say what country you're referring to - the rules may be different from one to the next.

You could also try doing a search in the search bar and see what comes up. There have many so many thousands fo brides on this site that someone may have posted something along the way that will give you an answer.

Good luck and happy planning!!

It's unlikely that the Catholic churches will allow you to use their facilities. They are fairly strict about their procedures, and I know that they require a letter of approval from the priest in the home parish to perform weddings in their churches.

There should be some sort of protestant churches there - though not many. I know one resort (El Dorado Royale) has a chapel that can be used for any ceremony (not specifically a Catholic chapel).

It looks like there's a Presbyterian church in Cancun:

I did a few google searches and found some other Christian churches that meet, but wasn't really able to find photos of their facilities (e.g. is it a small commercial building vs. a more formal church).
