Newbie Looking For Options

Hi there!

I'm newly engaged and in the very beginning stages of planning, we haven't even decided what year we are going to get married. I met my fiance while we were living abroad, so since we're not from the same place and flying within Canada is so expensive anyways, we were planning on having a destination wedding. I'm trying to come up with a plan A, which would be a resort wedding somewhere in the Caribbean with our immediate family (25-30 ppl including 2 kids and 2 toddlers) for which I was thinking maybe the Bahia Principe Akumal, and a plan B, which would be eloping somewhere exotic with only our two best friends as witnesses. Something awesome like in a rainforest in Central America or a bamboo hut in Thailand.

We both don't want to have anything big or complicated, so simple package deals are perfect for us. I'm open to advice for either Plan A or Plan B.

Thanks!

Maggie

Hi Maggie,

Congratulations and welcome to BDW! You're going to love this site!! There is a virtual ton of information, tips and ideas on destination weddings, in some fabulous tropical getaways.

Of course you'll get all kinds of opinions on resorts and locations. I can personally definitely recommend Jamaica! Plus the Mayan Riviera of Mexico is of course a favourite. Then there is the Pacific coast of Mexico too that has it's own natural beauty and stunning resorts.

I'm in Canada too, and you'll find a whole lot of Canadian brides, past and present on this site. The options are just a little bit different in terms of travel for Canadian brides. We have charter air packages that the US doesn't have so they are structured a little differently, as well as how you book, If you're in the Toronto area, I can help you out with a couple of agent names.

I would definitely recommend that you at least get an area of the Caribbean in mind. That would help narrow things down for you. Maybe take some time to browse through the Resort Reviews and see what other brides have said about different resorts and it might help you get closer to making a decision. As well, there will obviously be reviews for adults only resorts which you might help you eliminate them if you want everyone together.

The best thing I can say is spend some time going through the site. You can use the search bar and you will most likely get a forum or review of some kind on just about anything you're looking for. The ladies here are always willing to help out. There are lots of vendor reviews too that may also help you narrow down the "where" of getting married.

Have fun and happy planning!

Hey Maggie!  There is sooooo much information and planning involved. It's pretty overwhelming.  I think if I was you, I'd decide between Plan A and Plan B and then pick a spot from there.  Once you figure out WHAT you want, you can figure out where and work out the rest of the details.

Congratulations! Deciding on "the perfect location" can be an arduous task. However, once you decide whether or not you're going to elope or include family/friends, it will help make the decision easier.

We only invited 6 of our closest friends and have chosen to stream the ceremony "live" so that all others can be a part of the wedding without actually having to travel.

Welcome to the boards, Maggie + Congrats on your Engagement!!! as you can see from some brilliant ideas - like the one from "soontobeONE" about streaming the wedding to include those friends and family not in attendance - you'll find some great resources here :)

All the best with your research and planning process - enjoy :)
