Honestly we already did it so we can have paperwork and everything changed before the wedding next year - haha

That way when we come home its totally official!

Does anyone know if you can get your marriage license in your state and then bring it to your destination wedding and have the minister or whoever sign it there? Or do you HAVE to have a ceremony at home to make it legal? I would love to just be able to get the marriage license and not have to have a courthouse ceremony, I don't want to take away from the DW in any way.

I am struggling with this right now as well. Last night we were talking to my FI parents and they laughed when we told them and said "so your wedding in Mexico is going to be fake?" My response was well if you want to pay to have it be legal go right ahead! I was so upset after they left. We are paying for the wedding ourselves and don't really see the need to pay the extra $1000 and have to get there early just to make it "legal" especially when our entire wedding will cost about $6500. Now we are considering not even telling anyone and getting married at the courthouse (even paying for a witness ($21) so that our friends don't even know) and then pretending that we paid the extra money to make our ceremony legal.

Honestly, we are doing what's best for us. We don't want to wait an extra 3 months to get our marriage license from Jamaica and then have to figure out how to make it legal here after. I'd rather get it done here in a quiet way - I am hoping we don't even need to say vows or anything at the courthouse. I don't want to take away from our wedding in Jamaica because that will be our wedding day in our eyes. In Jamaica, the fees are minimal, so it's pretty much the same as doing the courthouse. We just don't want to have to wait forever to get our legal stuff done after getting home. Especially because our wedding is in October so I want to get all the legal stuff done before the year is over.

You don't need to tell anyone you made it legal at home. I have heard other people on here say at the symbolic ceremony you still sign some kind of certificate - so people won't really know the difference. It's just better to not tell anyone - I don't want people to make snide remarks or feel that our wedding isn't "real" or whatever.

We are getting married in the states first. Its so much easier and cheaper! We are inviting our 2 best friends to be our witnesses because they are required. We aren't telling anyone about it because they give you a certificate to sign so no one will know that we aren't legally getting married in cancun. We are also using the cancun date as our offical wedding anniversary.

My brother went into the marines and him and his wife got married before their actual wedding so she could go with him to his first duty station in japan and a lot of people gave them a hard time about their wedding not being real which made me so angry!! But people will give you a hard time!
