dress on the plane advice

Recommended Posts

We have to fly with a charter airline to Mexico, and everything is booked and paid for. So today, for some unknown reason I get an idea in my head to call and confirm that they will hang up my wedding dress in the pilot's closet (that's where I was told they generally hang such clothes). And they say no.smile43.gif What they will do is put it in the overhead compartment on top of stuff. So I hyperventilate a little (just a bit) and then begin to wonder how that works. I don't even remember the overhead compartments being long enough to accommodate a full length dress.

I'm leaving from Canada in December, generally a cold time here, and I think that people will have coats etc on the plane. So if their stuff is in the overhead where is my dress going?

Has this happened to anyone else? BTW its a full length dress with crynolin and such so its not like I can just fold it up in a suitcase.

I have the same problem and have been wondering what I am going to do. If I caome up with anything I will lat you know. I am thinking I will just fold the garment bag in half and use one of the compartments just for my dress. We are travelling with a group of 28, so I will just ask my guests sitting close to put their carry on in a different compartment. I'm sure they won't mind. I'm hoping this works. Let me know what you decide to do.

is anyone in your group in 1st class? They have "special" areas for dresses + suits in that area.

My mom is a 1st class type smile105.gif and she will be flying the day before me so she will be bringing it for me.

Did you call the airline or did you ask your travel agent ?

By the way, I am also getting married on December 12th 2007 in riviera maya !!!!! Leaving from Montreal...

Some hotels will press/steam your dress (Dreams Tulum does) so worst comes to worst, the hotel will unwrinkle it!

They were going to hang my dress in the first class closet and when we opened it to put it in there, it was full of crap and the dress would have been wadded at the bottom. I said no thanks and folded it neatly in half and put it over head. It was fine when we took it out. And most hotels do offer complimentary steaming of the wedding attire.

Let me ask a question - - When you carry the dress in the airport, are you going to hold it above your head so the dress doesn't hit the floor, or are you going to drape it over your arm?

Hmm I hadn't actually thought that far ahead. I guess I was going to lay it on top of the luggage on the cart.....If that didn't work, my fiance is 6'4 he would be carrying it.

I'm actually not all that fussy about it being bent into 2, I just don't want to take all the overhead compartment room so the other guests can't use it.

I'm pretty sure your dress will be just fine if you put it above in the overhead compartment. I neatly folded mine up above and nothing happened to it. When you land and go to your hotel you can immediately hang it up and not have to worry about it.
