June 2014 Riviera Maya Brides!

Recommended Posts

Hi Ladies!

It was a very productive weekend of wedding stuff! I am trying to gather my receipts for all of my bags. Some of the boxes only came with invoices with no prices. I am going to go back through ALL of my emails to try to find the receipts. I hope I don't have too many problems at customs. We packed everything up today and we will have 5 bags of stuff for the wedding. We are traveling with 6 family members so each of them will check an extra bag so it should work out just fine. What are you ladies doing? How many extra bags are you bringing down?

I finished packing 4 large bags of wedding stuff and have not started packing clothes! I'm having a couple of friends take 1 bag each so we should only have to check 2 bags each (one with clothes and one with wedding stuff) and then we'll have 2 carry ons each. One will be the Wally 66 garment bag with my dress and his suit. Of course, I am carrying on all jewelry.

I was able to find receipts for almost everything since I ordered most of it on line. I made an itemized list for each bag and will have the receipts travel with whoever has the bag. Even if Mexican Customs opens the bags, it should be obvious that it's for a wedding since a lot of it is personalized and can't be re-sold.

This week I worked on resort clothes since we are going to be away 10 days. I've got 4 swimsuits and 5 coverups which I plan to be in during most of the day. Plus, I have a few nice dresses for the evenings and several shorts/capris outfits. We're going to Secerts Silversands for 5 days of honeymoon and I know they dress up at night. Now, that I think about it, maybe I'll need another suitcase!

I packed up my OOT/favors yesterday and it took up 2 huge suitcases.  My Fiancee and I are traveling down to Mexico a week before the wedding and will probably just bring everything ourselves.  At this point we may have  like 5 large suitcases.

@Jennypert- Thanks for ideas for itemizing receipts and having a separate envelope for each suitcase. Also it's a good point about what's in the suitcases is OBVIOUS It's for a wedding anyway so it shouldn't be an issue. Fingers crossed! It's my biggest fear but it seems like from reading all of the posts on here none of the girls had any major issues and even those whose bag got searched at customs was able to show it was a wedding and they were able to move through quickly after that.

I did a goggle search for Mexican customs rules and read that wedding items are exempt from duty. However, that won't stop them from opening every suitcase and asking for receipts if they feel like it. The most I've heard of anyone paying was about $200 but it had to be in Mexican pesos - big hassle factor of trying to find an ATM at Cancun airport and paying outrageous exchange rates. Just to be safe, I will get a $100 or so exchanged in Chicago before we leave. If I don't use it at customs, I can use it to tip the resort staff.
