Moving Tips?

So next week at this time, we will be closing on the house nad moving in. That's the awesome part.

The not so awesome part is that although we have started packing, I feel like we have so much left to do! It's amazing how much junk you manage to accumulate over the years. At least this is a good opportunity to throw a lot of stuff out. It's been so long since I last moved, and the last time I moved (out of the place my ex and I shared) I basically left him a lot of the furniture and stuff and just bought all new stuff (with Brian) so I didn't have quite as much.

So do you have any tips to make it go easier?

Like I said, we do have a lot of stuff boxed, but still have a decent amount left.

We have the apt until Nov 2nd, so I'm thinking the 31st we can move small stuff in and knock some of the painting out of the way, like the kitchen and maybe the bedroom.

Usually I'm so organized, but I feel a bit overwhelmed by this task. I think because I want to try and get as much done before the baby is here, because I have a feeling it's not going to be the easiest thing to decorate with a newborn.

Other then label the boxes really well and place items in the box that would all put away in the same spot. Also the day you move make sure one person says what room the boxes goes in. This will help with moving boxes around many times.

I move a couple years ago, two days before Christmas and held a christmas dinner. And for the most part my house was unpacked. Course I'm super anal and wasn't pregnant so I stayed up all night getting everything done.

Do you have family and friends who are helping? Maybe hire a mover to handle all the big stuff..

hmmm...I just went through this, so here are my tips:

Throw out things you don't need/use. (or donate, of course). Don't move junk into a new house.

Label each box clearly with the name of the room it needs to go into in the new house. Then if you don't finish unpacking every room, at least the box with the stuff you need will be in the room it belongs in.

Ask your friends for help and buy them beer (or something) to thank them. More manpower is always good.

Try to do a little each night?

I have the boxes labeled inmy super anal way. They have the name of the my or brian's name if it's specifica to one us, the contents and the room they are supposed to go in (office, bedroom, basement, etc). So I'm thinking of printing up signs for each room and hanging them on the doors so peple know which room is which. Brian thinks I'm being over anal about it though!

We have some about 3 or 4 of Brian's friends helping us move. Technically I of course won't be moving much and will be unpacking more, but I am SUCH A CONTROL FREAK. Seriously, it's making me anxious that people won't put stuff in the right room, etc. Yeah, I have problems.

Ha, yeah, we are totally luring our friends with food and beer :)

I think I'm going to start trying to pack up some stuff every night. Right now I've just been doing it on weekends and I get burned out so easily, it sucks because Brian hs hardly been home at all for the past two weeks because of work. After class tonight I'll try and get some more done. Maybe I can convince my friend to come and hang out with me... and um... pack some stuff.

Make sure to pack an overnight bag with all of your necessaties for a day or two. Don't wanna have to dig for shampoo or clean panties! Do what you can before the move: line the shelves/drawers in the kitchen, clean what needs done, take toilet paper, etc...

Don't stress too much!

Like you said, I would paint as much as you can before moving in the big stuff. When we bought our house 3 years ago, we settled one day and moved in the next. It was a huge pain trying to paint and tear up rugs once everything is there. This time I plan to do it differently if possible!

I was gonna say to put signs on the door to each room so eveyone will know what boxes go in what room. But you have that covered already.

Also, once everything is moved in, make the bed right away before you start to unpack. This way, once you get tired of unpacking, you'll at least have a place to sleep.

Good luck with your move!!!

Definitely pack a little bit each night - the more the day goes on, the more unorganized you will be...

I actually had a different take than what everyone else seems to agree on above. We definitely labeled all the boxes, but put them all into one room (Extra bedroom) and took them out of that room as we unpacked. This way, you don't live your life surrounded by extra boxes everywhere you go. When you're ready to rest, you close the door to that room and can forget about it a little bit.

Then again, it took me about 9 months to get all the boxes out of that room...so it could delay things a bit...
