How much notice should I give my guests...?

Trying to keep guest list around 50 people, planning to get married in NC, emerald, isle, ocean isle, Wilmington beach area. Although we do not have an exact date or location/venue we have been saying October 2014 for the past year. I'm thinking of sending invites at the latest 6 months prior which would be march/ April. Of and My fiance' and most of our guests are from western PA. His parents and sister live near Raleigh, NC. We aren't doing STD's, we've been engaged for just over a year we haven't had an engagement party or anything.  So what is protocol here?
