Any couples have a symbolic ceremony instead of Civil??

Recommended Posts

Oddly enough, the legal wedding rules in Mexico are the reason we opted to get married in Jamaica! As much as we both love Mexico, and have been several times, being there "X" number of days in advance, plus translating all the paperwork, etc was just too much, and I found out it was going to be upwards of $750 to have all the paperwork translated into spanish. Jamaica was easy and fun. No hassle and we did get legally married there. I wanted my wedding date to be my "wedding date". Now if health things work out and we get to do our vow renewal next year, I want to do it in Mexico since all that's needed for that is a symbolic ceremony!

Good luck everyone and happy planning!

We are doing a symbolic as well! We looked into the Catholic, but it's in Spanish and you have to have all the bloodwork done as well, so we will have a friend marry us (in private) before we head down there!

Hi There -

We too are doing a legal ceremony here in the U.S. prior to our wedding in Mexico next year but aren't going to tell our guests. My fiance really wanted to have a legal ceremony at first but then changed his mind once I did research and showed him the extra costs associated with such among other things.  Ultimately, our minds were settled for us because our wedding date has to be on a Sunday and they don't do legal ceremonies on Sundays.

Our travel agent actually suggested getting married at the courthouse and then having a symbolic ceremony in Mexico. She said it looks EXACTLY the same and no one has to know (she's had SEVERAL brides do it.) She also said it saves some of the hassle as far as arriving early (I think you are required to be there 4 days before the civil ceremony), getting blood drawn, obtaining copies of the certificate and having in translated. I hope this helps.

We actually got married in Vegas in Dec 2014 and are having a symbolic wedding ceremony in Mexico in Jan 2015...

My husband is on a military deployment until Aug 2015 and we didn't want to wait or have to worry about planning a wedding around his return--which can change...

So we eloped in Vegas--had a BLAST and are planning the wedding of our dreams for January!!
