Went Dress shopping for the first time...not really into it!

Recommended Posts

Michelle, can you post pics of the dresses that you have in mind? I want to see what you're thinking about. Also, what dresses did you try on already? I want to see those too.

A lot of us on here ended up with dresses we didn't think we would get. That may very well be the case for you too.

This one I did like alright...my friend liked the flowers at the bottom and now that I see it on the model I like them but it looked weird on me! the one I tried was really big for me so she had to tie it and it just isn't the same...

Not bad...and this picture you can't see the bottom well, but I didn't like the beading too much but the style was okay.

My friend really liked this on the rack. I love halter and am definately not against it...but this one looks like it would be form fitting. I couldn't really tell because the one there was a size 4 and yeah I am so not there yet!!! :) So couldn't get a good idea

I will try and post some more that I was looking at online. :)

Ok, this is good. You have to look at the first shopping day as the "narrow it down to what style looks good on me" day. You now know what you like and don't like. You don't like form fitting. That would tell me, you should stay away from sheath gowns and maybe look at more A-line. Ok, you like both the strapless and halter, that's good. Both are very flattering and you can avoid low cut necklines with them. This is all good info. Now you need to make an appointment at a salon and tell the sales person this. They know their inventory so they'll be able to find stuff for you that will fit this criteria. I think I visited 5 different salons before I found my dress. You need to get out there and try on a bunch of dresses so you can now narrow down the color, beading, neckline, etc. Trust me, as you try on dresses that are closer to what you're looking for, you'll be so much more into this. I wish I lived closer, I would totally go with you.

Ok, so I went on the Maggie website and did a search for their Slim A-line gowns. Here are a few. I thought you might like the Slim A-line better (less poofy.) Check them out and if you like any of them, then find a salon in your area that carries them and go try them on.

Thanks Jen!! You put it all into perspective. I guess it is a process of elimination and for someone who needs order...it makes sense and would be a lot less stressful for me to narrow my options vs just going blind! :) I am going to look at these that you posted now....

That one was my favorite too (of all of those.) It's simple, yet elegant, not poofy, but you'll still look like a bride. PLEASE go try that one on. I think you would look GORGEOUS in it. Go today!!! - LOL!!!!

Oh, and the rousching is VERY flattering.

You might want to call first, just to check. Even the salons that carry Maggie dresses may not have that exact one. Of course, it doesn't hurt to bring a picture of that dress and see if they have something similar to it too. Good luck and let us know what happens. (If you can sneak a pic with your camera, do it.)

I had a similar situation - but I was REALLY looking forward to dress shopping....until I actually got there. I figured since most dresses that salons have for you to try on are a size 8 or 10, that I would fit in them and really get a feel for how they woudl look on me. WRONG!

The size 8's and 10's were way too small, which made me feel fat. The dresses I loved in the magazines looked terrible on me, and my mother and I totally clashed on everything.

My solution was this - I went to a nicer bridal salon where I didn't feel that I was getting a sales pitch. The lady who helped me had an intimate knowledge of fabrics, her inventory, designers, everything. I tried on dresses that I thought I wanted, and when they didn't work, she brought me other dresses that were similar to what I thought I wanted, but were more flattering on me. She asked lots of questions and was able to convince me to try on dresses that I HATED on the rack, but I loved once I put them on.

Now I have it narrowed down to 2 dresses!

So my best suggestion is to find a great bridal shop with an intimate setting and knowledgable staff. To me, that proved to be the biggest factor, and the last time I went shopping, it was actually fun!

Good luck, and keep us posted!
