Not at a resort - Renting a house to share

Recommended Posts

Has anybody rented a house (or two) for your guests to stay at instead of staying at a resort? I was thinking of doing this (we'll be inviting everybody to join us for a few days of Disney after the wedding) and I was wondering how you split costs and decide how big a house you need? And do you book the house based on RSVPs or do you wait until everybody has booked?

I haven't done this but I know brides have had amazing things to say about villa weddings. Here's a recent article on villa weddings in Mexico. http://www.bestdestinationwedding.com/a/planning-a-villa-wedding-in-mexico and a thread on villa weddings in Jamaica: http://www.bestdestinationwedding.com/t/72888/villa-weddings-brides-jamaica

But I digress. I know you mentioned wanting the house AFTER the wedding for you/your guests. I've stayed in rented houses with people before and I think it's best to email everyone a few house options at various price points to get votes. Then you can choose a house based on how many people are in and how much they are willing to spend. Since most houses require a deposit, I'd split that up among everyone who is interested in staying so they are all on the hook for the house, and then split all the costs equally. In the past we've had a few people get all the groceries, then just bring the receipts so we can all chip in after the fact. We also split up cooking and cleaning duties.

Good luck-- sounds like it'll be fun!!

This sounds like such a great idea but maybe more complicated? Years ago, friends and I rented a house in Mexico and it was super cheap to stay. But it may be harder to coordinate travel between ceremony/reception sites? And activities/excursions for the guests?

That is what I'm worried about, although we will be renting a car for us, and I suspect most people will be doing their own excursions separate from us (we'll be doing things geared to our kids ages, not adults lol)

I think it's a bit different because we aren't going somewhere all inclusive, so while we want to split housing costs like this (a week will cost what two nights would at a hotel,) the actual vacation planning will be up to each individual (although we'll provide a list of nearby attractions/points of interest and our plans for anybody who wants to come along with us.)
