a reception with NO DANCING????

Recommended Posts

My FI and I are torn on this subject, neither of us are big dancers. We're planning to do the traditional 1st dance, mother/son and father/daughter because we think it's important to our parents, but after than we're probably done dancing for the night. However, I'm sure their will be people who want to dance. We're not planning to spend the extra money for the dance floor or to have a DJ because for us, we'd rather spend that money else where. But we will have music playing from our iPod and we're thinking about bringing in the fire dancers.

We are huge card players. We love poker, rummy and what not, so we're considering setting up a few games after dinner and people can dance if they want, but there will be card games too. Plus there's also a nice midnight swim if we get too bored :)

I think if you have a great group of people they will make sure they are having fun no matter what you plan.

Hi All,

I just wanted to bump this thread to see what new brides think of this idea. For many reasons, having a laid back reception with no dancing would suit our styles best. However, I feel that doing so "cheats" our guests out of the wedding experience, and since they are traveling so far to come to the wedding, I feel like I owe it to them.  Any thoughts?

I think it depends on what you want and the crowd.

My sister's wedding had no dancing whatsoever, it was in a really gorgeous restaurant that had no dance floor (at least the closed off part where we were didn't), and it was still great because the place was so beautiful, the food was good and we were there to celebrate them.

I say do whatever you want, and weigh in what your guests would enjoy - sometimes the best "entertainment" is not so obvious such as dancing, but something that is more meaningful or different from what they're used to.

I don't really agree that wedding receptions are nothing without the booze and dance, I think that's what a night in town is like if you want to party...... a wedding is a celebration of two people coming together for life (hopefully) so...do as you wish!

I won't be having dancing at mine because of our location (inside a small wine cellar) without a dance floor- or even space to dance.  My parents are actually ballroom dance instructors so there will be two dancers at the very least, but we have a smaller group 22-24people. To combat this lack of dancing I am thinking of having a mexican trio perform during our cocktail hour on the outside promenade where it will be held, which will give people a little more space to dance if they wish. I will also include on the day of schedule a post reception dancing as an optional thing people can attend after the reception, this will just be located at one of the resort clubs.

I am not a big dancer - so I don't care about the dancing but you do need entertainment of sorts throughout the night. Were having one long table so we will be able to chat a little easier than if we had a bunch of tables to visit. I am not a fan of dry weddings personally, but that certainly isn't what weddings are all about

I hate to contradict  but I don't dance and am not a big fan of watching others dance...

We are having our reception at a local marina/restaraunt/bar on the water. They have a live band every night of the week and that will be our music. Our wedding is a lot like yours, 40 or so people. Neither one of us are dancers, so much so we aren't even doing a first dance or mother son dance, etc... it's just not important to us. What is important is spending time with our family and friends, so what if they feel it was just a dinner... at least it was a dinner with people we love on such an important day of our lives. People can go dance with the band if they want to though :)
