Mayan wedding ceremony at the grand sunset princess or other hotels in the riviera maya

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone has done the Mayan ceremony. I am debating between that or simply the symbolic ceremony. I have some specific questions that I would love to have answered by you.

1. How does the ceremony unfold? I`ve read that it includes the four elements and that it lasts 40 minutes, but happens during these 40min.

2. Can we inlcude our own vows? exchange or rings during the mayan ceremony?

3. Does the chaman (not sure how to spell it) speak English or do we need a translator?

4. At the GSP is the ceremony done in the Gazebo or on the beach?

5. Anyone have pictures?

6. What would you prefer, a regular ceremony or the Mayan one?

Thanks!

Hi,

A Mayan ceremony with a shaman in a wild landscape makes sens! I love when it happen in a cenote (Natural freshwater pool in the jungle).

Luisa (local wedding planner from Wedding Riviera Maya) knows very well the area and help you to findthe perfect location!

Hi Emfayed,

First of all please note that a real Shaman is 100% authentic mayan and becomes Shaman by inheritance, so their grandparents and parents were Shamans and of course the ceremony should be in mayan.  So far there are only two in the area and the ceremony is ancient and real, it is not a show if you want to add a glance, you can have dancers, your guests will loved them!

There are also cosmic ceremonies and oradores who are performing beautiful and meaningful ceremonies but are not mayans or ancient.

Please find below the answer to your questions in blue:

1. How does the ceremony unfold? I`ve read that it includes the four elements and that it lasts 40 minutes, but happens during these 40min.

Ceremony lasts around 30-35 minutes.  First the air is purified with the sound of conch shell and the copal (incense) then the Shaman will ask permission to the 4 cardinal points, then the 4 elements, then he will do the blessing for bride and grrom, the exchange of flowers (rings if you want also), the mayan vows and the balche (Champagne) at the end he finishes with a offer to the water (ocean or cenote).

2. Can we inlcude our own vows? exchange or rings during the mayan ceremony?

Yes it can be possible.

3. Does the chaman (not sure how to spell it) speak English or do we need a translator?

The Shamans I know do not speak english so a translator will help.

4. At the GSP is the ceremony done in the Gazebo or on the beach?

Can be done everywhere near water with or without a Gazebo.

5. Anyone have pictures?

Here are a few:

6. What would you prefer, a regular ceremony or the Mayan one?

I like both but personally if I am in the area, I will always prefer the original and authentic one.

Hope it helps!  Happy planning!
