Getting legally married before going to Mexico. Should we tell our parents/families? Keep it a secret?

Recommended Posts

I feel if we tell them....then it takes the excitement away......but all depends on what date u are gonna say or celebrate your Anniv..... if its the DW date....then keep it between you/hubby....and especially if u think its gonna be some negative backlash.

Now, if u are gonna celebrate the legal ceremony as your Anniv...then yea eventually u have to tell them...but wait til later on...months later....

I'm torn over this also, but know that in the end we will have to tell close family we are doing the wedding here because some of the people are really old and won't be able to travel, so it's the only part of the marriage they will be able to partake in

Our parents are given the option to be there. His bc they likely won't make it to Mexico and mine bc I want them their....other then that the whole wedding ceremony will be in Mexico, here it will strictly be the legal stuff

I'm actually having a church/legal ceremony a week before we go to Cancun.  I wanted to just go to city hall and have something simple but my fiance really wanted the whole church ceremony.  I gave in and now its like planning another mini wedding.  We've met with our priest like 5 times lol and had to take pre cana classes.  At first I wasn't really into the idea but now that its a month away and  a lot family and some friends who are not joining us in Mexico are coming to the church i'm actually glad he talked me into it.  Its also nice to do it at our local church so we can always share that with our future kids.  Definately is stressful though planning two ceremonies.

We are also getting married in Canada before Mexico.

We have decided to pick witnesses for Canada who are NOT coming to Mexico so 1. it doesn't slip out 2. they aren't offended we are doing it this way and 3. doesn't take away from anyone's excitement.

I personally don't think any of my guests would be offended that it isn't legal in Mexico, but I have heard some people do get bent out of shape about it.

Side note - some people will realize it isn't a legal ceremony, Mexico or not.   My friend has been to MANY DW, and she already quizzed me on how I was able to marry so quick after landing, as generally you need 4-5 days for bloodwork, etc.  AHHH! So I told her, 'the resort gave me the dates, I picked one'          Also, at my resort they don't get a witness to sign for the symbolic ceremony, so I hope our guests don't question that either. I may ask if we can get them to sign just for 'show'.

Well we had fully intended to do the legal courthouse thing right before our wedding but now something came up. He's going back to school and since we just moved here to TX last yr he doesn't qualify for in state tuition unless he's been employed for the last 12 months. (He got hurt on the job and had to leave after a few months and hasn't been able to get another job). Unless we get legally married and he does it through me....I'll be employed for 12 months in another month and a half. I felt bad cuz my reaction was kinda iffy on this, but I just feel like doing it so far in advance will make the DW seem less special or something. Idk why I'm having a hard time deciding to do it this early when we were going to do it anyway. It's like over $1,000 difference with in state and out of state tuition so we could totally use that extra money for the wedding!
