Canadian Couple having a Catholic Wedding in Mexico - Legal Question

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

My fiancee and I are getting married at the Grand Palladium resort in the Riviera Maya in February 2013.  Our marriage will be under a Catholic Ceremony.  We have all the necessary paperwork for the church including paperwork from the Archdiocese here in Toronto and the NIHIL OBSTAT form.

Now my question is, do we have to get a marriage license or have a civil ceremony here in Toronto in order to have a legally recognized marriage in Ontario, Canada?  Are there any Canadian (Ontario) couples on the forum that have had a Catholic Ceremony in Mexico before?  What legal documents did you need/have when you came back to Canada?

Thanks,

Hi there!

The Riviera Maya has plenty of wonderful churches and chapels for a catholic wedding. You can see a selection of catholic chapels (including sea front) on this link  Catholic weddings in the Riviera Maya.

Concerning catholic legal steps, you are well advised to contact a local wedding planner. Weddings Riviera Maya can assist you to choose the church of your dream a manage legal requirements

Hello Garby77,

Probably by now, you already have all your documentation for your catholic ceremony next February.

However here is the information from the Parish here in Playa del Carmen.

The catholic Church is very good organized all around the world so they will let you know step by step what you should do, otherwise as Pierre says, if you have a wedding planner you can ask her.

Hope it helps and happy planning!
