Bringing it all to Mexico

GREAT IDEA about the space saving bags!  I am going to make a trip to my local Dollar Store and see if I can find some!  This will be great for my chair sashes, table runners and my actual OOT bags!!!  Thank you for sharing!

We had done a 'scouting' trip and found a few places. There is the huge outdoor market down south at Tulum. Also there are some supply stores such as Sam's Club in Playa del Carmen (like a Costco, but you need a membership).

We personally got our supplies from the Wal-mart in Cancun and the party supply store in Cancun, just outside of local Market 23. They cost us $12 US for 8 vases. Market 23 is the food market (fruits, veggies, meat and CANDY!!!) You can see them on my planning thread: http://www.bestdestinationwedding.com/t/69198/murmels-planning-journal-pic-and-template-heavy

Hope that helps!

Oh I forgot to mention that I purchased a bunch of space saving bags from the dollar store, the kind you pack and then use your vaccum to suck all the air out - these made a huge difference with how much I could fit in each suitcase, really helpful for packing my paper lanterns, oot bags and linens.

Great idea!! I am making a note of that as I type this. Thanks!

We flew with Sunwing and were able to arrange an additional 30kg ahead of time for about $150 (plus we got upgraded seats). Or if you're not using a TA, call the airline and see if you can arrange something. They usually are very accomadating to brides, especially if they know ahead of time that you will have extra luggage (that way they can plan ahead, ie. not take as much cargo).

Also when thinking about what to bring down, plan! We brought down paper lanterns, which fold flat. So they don't take much room. Most OOT bag items were small, or flat- so packing them was not difficult. When we arrived in Mexico (we got there 2 days in advance of our guests), we went out and bought stuff locally, such as treats, snacks, and the vases we used for our center pieces. This way we didn't have to travel with it, and it was cheap down there anyway! Plus our guests LOVED the local treats- it gave the OOT bags a Mexican flare.

Also be ready to have your baggage inspected at the airport. If you get the 'red' light, or if you have a lot of extra baggage they will likely want to look. We tried to keep all our decor and OOT bag stuff together so that it was organized, and we had the reciepts in hand. Explain that you are getting married in Mexico and it is gifts for your guests. (they are worried sometimes that this stuff might be brought into Mexico to be sold. Which they prohibit)

Love it!! Do you have a review of your wedding yet. I'd love to see what was in your OOT bags. Congrats and thanks for all the advice!

Just read your thread posted above! WOW!! Good thing you were so prepared. I am going to try and plan to take normal looking suitcases and maybe even buy some OOT stuff down there instead of trying to haul it all with me. Thanks for the input!

We had 3 suitcases designated to luggage (6 suitcases in total!)  One suitcase was strictly OOT bags that were already packaged. The other 2 were for decoration (paper lanterns, white glass lanterns, led candles, 2 drift wood garlands, picture frames, easels, flower petals, sparklers, tall skinny candles, sea shell pew decorations, table runners and much more) We booked with Sunwing and we booked under the "elite plus" seating which gave us early plane boarding, one extra suitcase with 10 extra kg (so 2 extra suitcases and 30kg each) Our uncle had a carry on so he took one of our suitcases. It is tricky packing all of your stuff down to your destination but its no impossible!

I used bubble wrap and tissue paper to wrap the breakables and did my best to strategically pack everything and all of our stuff made it to Mexico without any breakage.
