After the previous conversation and the fact that he was going through so much I just responded "OK".  He then suggested that we have a 'pretend' wedding on our upcoming trip to Mexico, to which I again simply responded "OK".  That quickly changed to maybe we should do the real thing and elope when we go (3 months later), again he simply got an "OK" from me.  The next words out of his mouth were met with much more excitement when he said we couldn't do that and we should call our parents right away to tell them.  We got my parents out of bed that night and his folks thought they were dreaming (he was 41 at the time and had been telling them since he was a teenager that he would never marry), he still thinks that he owes me a super romantic proposal but I think that the way it happened was perfect!

It was a very short engagement but we were able to have 29 friends and family members join us and since his Dad passed away 9 months later I am very happy that things happened exactly as they did and we were able to share our day with him.

Magical or not they are all special stories.

My own DH proposed in our bedroom in his boxers as we were getting ready to go have breakfast with friends. It wasn't the "magical romantic" proposal I had always imagined but it was special and now 12 years later I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

I think it was a very sweet and unique way to propose, it seemed perfect due to the situation. Definitely better than mine, but it always gives a story to tell. My boyfriend of 4 years had recently went to a concert with his buddies and he told me he had bought me something. When I went to his house the next day he got down on one knee when I was sitting on the couch and proposed with a bracelet! The next day we went to pick up the ring from Jared's. He told me that we wanted to make sure I said yes before he spent more money on the ring (and to make sure it was the right size)! ha!

i ruined my proposal twice he was planning to propose on New Years and about an hour before I said that the last thing I would ever want is to be proposed to on a holiday what a stupid thing to do so that scratch that idea

then he was going to propose at a flogging molly concert but someone else got propose to that night and I was like that is weird who would want to get proposed to here?

in my defense i had no idea he had a ring either time

in the end i regret saying anything because my proposal wasnt a dream proposal for me and kinda of awkard but i cannot blame the man i think he was tried of trying

It's nice to read about other people's awkward proposals as well. Ours was very awkward!

My husband in training and I were living together at the time. For the purposes of this story you need to know that his big vice is Warhammer. For those who don't know what that is, he buys tiny models, builds them, paints them, and then plays intriciate 4 hour long table top games with them. So one night he is out playing warhammer,  and I came home from an awful day at work, felt like absolute trash, ditched my plans for the evening, watched terrible movies on Netflix and all around was feeling like I had been shot with a tranquilizer dart.

He came home excited as usual (he loves playing warhammer) and wanted to show me the models he bought. So I listened to him tell me about what he bought (he said I was rolling my eyes haha) and then he pulled something else out of the bag, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was really happy for about 10 minutes and then I just started crying about how I had a terrible day otherwise, so he took the ring back and said we would do it when I was feeling better.

Two days later he proposed at our favourite brunch place. Neither felt exactly perfect on their own but I kind of love the entire weird story.

Krystal - Your proposal is so sad, but so sweet at the same time!

My fiance and I were spending a quiet night in for New Years this year due to a very sick old cat. We had a meat and cheese tray, wine and were trying to have as good a night as we could.  I spent most the night tending to my cat, syringe feeding her, cleaning up after her in between watching the NYE celebrations on tv.  He had been planning to propose at 11:59pm for months. So that we got engaged the last minute of 2013. My kitty died at 11:41pm.  He was in a panic and left me (sobbing) to go get his phone.  He was texting people which I didn't get, I was upset.  I found out afterwards that he was texting his sister to find out if he should still go ahead with his plans.  After we had taken care of my cat and had a good cry, he told me he wished he could make me happy and take away my pain. Then he said the only thing he knew that may save the evening a little bit was by doing something he'd thought about since we met then asked if I would do him the honor of being his wife.  It might not have been everyone's dream proposal, and it certainly wasn't mine, but I think that had he postponed it, it wouldn't have been as sweet.

I also found out afterwards that when I had a nap earlier in the day after a vet appointment with my cat that he told my cat that he would take care of me if she was ready to go. I also told her that if it was time that I would be well taken care of.

I just wanted to say that your story is so sweet, Krystal! We can't always get what we want - or what others want - but oftentimes we get what we need. :) My proposal went just like I wanted it to go, but that was mostly because I just wanted him to propose to me. Screw expectations! Compromise is an art, one that helps a great deal in married life. ;)
