Well said! So true! It's hard along the way, but at the end of the day, your wedding is about you and your groom!!

I get the same comments some from friends and family! There are the few people that are supportive and excited about our vacation but I think we all have the negative ones too. Just yesterday I had someone say "Mexico?? Do you wanna come back from your wedding alive?" It took a lot for me to just to laugh and change the subject! Oh well, it's their loss for not coming!

I have a family who looooves to travel, but I do occasionally get the annoying comment of "you're making us spend all this money"....which makes me freak out very quickly and loudly, so they know not to go there again :)

People just don't understand that it's OK for them not to come instead of coming and giving us the guilt trip of our lives (pun intended). I bet most brides in this forum go through exactly the same situation.

My FI is from Canada, I'm from Brazil but currently living in the UK...so there is zero chance of pleasing everyone. We made a point to choose Mexico as it was equally (almost) far away for everybody.

I can anticipate it's going to get a little tougher as it gets close to the wedding (no one has booked yet), but whatever.... they're not the ones getting married at the end of the day!

Bottom line it.... it WILL be worth it because you choose it so.

I have been on vacation to mexico four times but after all of the non traveling family members would not stop talking about how unsafe it is i opted for jamaica. Funny thing is i felt so much safer walking down the streets in playa del Carmen than i ever did in montego bay. At the end of the day it is important to me to have my imediate family there with me, so i am willing to be somewhat flexible.

Hi

I am from the States and my fiance lives in Canada, plus our families are different religions (we are neither)....so a destination wedding was perfect for us! I've always wanted to get married on a beach. We too had some resistance and complaints from some family about having to pay for their air+resort. I tried to emphasize that this will be a week vacation for the families to get to know each other, especially important when you are all so far apart.

Here are a few things that really frusterate me because I think that most guest have no idea about them

1. Yes the DW costs you money for air and resort, BUT DW brides work very hard with a travel agent to get group bookings and group discounts at a rate that you would NEVER get on your own for an entire week's vacation. We plan the wedding 6months--1 year ahead to give our guests pleny of notice. It's an amazing deal for a week's vacation!

2. Even though you pay your air and resort, the wedding is NOT free to DW brides. We still pay for decorations, chair sashes, music, rentals, private menu, flowers, etc. Yes it's usually less expensive than a wedding at home, but that is mostly because the guest numbers are way lower and alcohol is included in the AI. It's still not free.

I think that every DW bride goes through this and it sucks. Feel free to vent on here and in the end know it's about you and your groom's day.

Hi guys,

It is interesting to hear what brides go through to convince their own family to have a destination wedding in Mexico. It is a shame the violence has scared so many away but as one of my recent brides told me in an email: It is more dangerous to go to the movies in the USA than to go to Puerto Vallarta... her words! Anyway, if you want many links and information about safety in Puerto Vallarta I would be glad to help. The truth is Mexican violence is between the gang members in big cities and mostly in border areas. Tourist towns are not a focal point of the violence except for Acapulco which is so close to gangland. International tourists visit by the millions and how many have you heard of that have been killed??

So safety should be the last of their worries unless they plan on getting involved with drugs or shady places off the tourist areas.

Good luck and if you need supportive links or referrals of how safe Puerto Vallarta is I will be glad to provide them.

Thank you for choosing Puerto Vallarta for your wedding. Our families and town appreciates your business and support in these trying times for our tourism industry.

Thank you Jimmy! It is a shame there is so much ignorance about Mexico. I have been infuriated with the level of disrespect some of my extended family members have displayed over our decision to marry in Puerto Vallarta. They know literally nothing about the area and have singled it out simply for being "in Mexico." Unfortunately with people like this, they don't want to know the truth; their minds are made up and so unfortunately they will likely not be part of the big day. But we have to go on and have an amazing time anyway!
