I actually bought the little testers in the paint department from Home Depot for I think $2.50.  So it is flat wall paint.  This way I was able to get the exact color I wanted.  You could use any acrylic craft paint as well.  I am planning to still put a spray enamel coat on them, my dad tells me it's a polyurathane to seal the paint so it won't chip.  I haven't done that part yet.

Did the $2.50 tester cans from Home Depot paint all of the maracas that you had?

YES!!  with TONS left over!!  I am actually using it to paint a cake stand and three vases as well and I'm pretty sure there will still be a lot left.  It was a GREAT deal!

Thanks for that idea! I wanted to paint my own maracas as well for the wedding, and wasnt sure which paints would show up well on the wood. AWESOME!
