Transporting Wedding Dress

Unfortunately, we are getting up there before anyone else and all of the stuff is for the welcome bags. I may be able to have some carry a couple things...good idea!

We had 4 checked bags, 2 carry-on garment bags (my dress & his suit), and a small carrry-on backpack. It was a long travel day toting all that stuff. Continental was a real stickler about the 50lb rule. My FI was adament that he didn't want to pay the fee so he kept rearranging until we were good. So, I know your pain. When we explained it was our wedding, the gate agents did try to help us repack though. My advice is to get to the airport early.

I don't know if anyone has tried this, but I know people that do it for business travel all the time, but it's usually domestic.

 

Has anyone ever tried shipping things down to their location in advance?

 

 

If so, who did they use and how did it go?

Ann, I obviously haven't done it yet, but I think there were mixed results. There is a lot of info on the old forum with shipping into too, but I think the info on this thread is pretty good:

When it comes down to it, I will probably be too nervous to ship. It would be nice to not have to worry about all that extra stuff though!

I was originally planning to ship, but then didn't want to spend the money. It would have cost another $200. I'm wishing I didn't have to deal with it right now. Luckily we are on a direct flight and it's only 2 hours.

You can definitely just pay for overweight items - as long as you are not flying during an "excess baggage embargo" - which is usually on Continental and Delta during high traffic seasons... hold on I'll see if I can find the pages with dates for you (good to prepare for this ahead of time - just in case)...

Here's the details for Continental Airlines (I don't know what your flyign downthere but since this is what MariaElena fly I htought I'd go with it:

 

 

Checked baggage in excess of the free baggage allowance will be charged as follows:

$100 per piece

 

Over 50 pounds (23kg) - Contact Continental Airlines Reservations to obtain specific rate and maximum weight allowance based on destination.

Baggage weighing more than 70 lbs (32 kg) will not be accepted as checked baggage.

 

Here's the date they won't accept Excess baggage (you're in the clear but just barely!):

Los Cabos, Mexico (SJD)

November 15, 2006 - January 15, 2007

March 30, 2007 - April 11, 2007

June 4, 2007 - August 31, 2007

 

I think they will allow 1 peice extra subject to availability...

i wouldn't check it - no way! they will accomodate you i bet, i wouldn't worry. as a last resort you can always lay it in the overhead bins on top of other stuff. you'd have to get a pretty cruel flight crew to not accomodate a bride!

Have your dressmaker/alterations person/place you bought it from pack it in a bag that you can carry on. My dress was pretty big and it fit in a 22 inch bag just fine. I hung it up when I got there and it was totally fine - I didn't iron it, just had my MIL hang it in the bathroom while she showered. I had had it packed for over a week.

 

Tip I learned from my amazing dressmaker - get a white (no dye) king size sheet that your dressmaker can wrap around it so it won't snag on the bag or its own beads.
