Quick question — I am ready to send save the dates now for my June 2013 wedding, but I'm wondering if it's too soon.  I've seen in some places that STD's should be sent 8 months - 1 year in advance, but I've also seen elsewhere that for a destination wedding you should send them as soon as you book the location and date.

Thoughts?  Should I send them now (15 months in advance) or wait until June (1 year in advance)?

I'm ordering mine as soon as I get my FI's guest list.  For destination I'm pretty sure you want to give people as much notice as possible.

Honestly I have read all different times brides send them out on this site. I sent mine about 13 months out. I felt that the earlier people knew the longer they can save...

As soon as I got our confirmation and wedding website done with the info,I sent them out. Which I am happy I did because the "friends" who should be coming are telling me they cant afford it even though I gave you a year to save....just makes ME feel better lol!

But really its up to you. There is no right or wrong time to send them!

we started letting people know about 14 months out, but the STD didn't go out until about 11 months before. I would have rather sent them at the 14 month mark so people could save, and I could get an idea of how many rooms to block ahead of time. So I say go for it!

Typically for destination weddings anywhere from a year/year and half is a good zone to send these out. You don't want to be soooo far out that people forget about it. Save the Dates are also a great way to direct your friends and family to your wedding website, where you can post updates on events, travel information, transfers, etc! But anytime in that timeframe is fine really and it does give them time to save their pennies!

Invitations typically go out 3 months before the wedding, but a lot of people are choosing only to do a Save the Date with their destination wedding these days, both to save on costs, and to save on paper/waste for the environment. If you're not doing a formal invitation, and are sending out your Save the Dates more than a year out, plan to have some kind of a reminder to your guests that can go out about 7 months prior, and perhaps another one 4 months prior. Even if it's just an email blast or evite you'll need to remind people about booking, and you'll want to get them excited about their trip!!

We aren't getting married until Dec 2013 but we plan to send out pre-save the dates asap (probably a postcard).  We want to give our friends and family as much time as they may need to save for the trip.  We then plan to send additional save the dates about a year ahead of time, and then the official invite (only to those that are going) about 4 months ahead of time.

We're getting married in June 2012 and we sent Save the date magnets (from Vistaprint) last June. I would have sent them out a bit earlier but we just had to be certain of a few details first! I liked the idea of a magnet because I have seen these magnets on our guests fridges etc and they haven't lost the invite or stuffed it in a drawer! :)

I was having the same dilemma until I had TONS of people asking me for details. I think as soon as people are trying to get info and start making their plans it is a good time to send them out. My STD's have a link to our website as well as contact info for our TA. I say go for it.
