Save the Date's without exact information???

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am new to all of this and came across this website while looking up some information/ettiquette for save the dates and a destination wedding...

My fiance and I are both teachers and so we do not have much option for our DW. Christmas/winter holidays, spring break, or summer... we have decided to go away over the Christmas/winter break. We will definitely be leaving after Christmas (boxing day or later as it is unfair to ask our guests to miss the holiday with their families) and we are still in the middle of choosing a loacation and specific date. At the same time we want to give everyone as much notice as possible so they have time to save money. Do any of you have suggestions as to how we can send out a save the date with so much unknown?

Also for some reason in my head my thoughts were that the travel/resort info would go in an invitation (to be sent out earlier than a regular home wedding invite) but from the little bit I have read on here is it really the save the date all of that info would go on and the invite is just like any other invite? If so is there some sort of pre-save the date that can be done just to give people a heads up? From my conversations with the TA it sounded like once we decide where we want to go people only have about a month to make a down payment to hold a spot... if that goes out in the invite it is not a lot of time, hence why I wanted to give a heads up before hand...

So confused... Thanks in advance for any help/info/advice...

i would say in your case, a pre-save the date would be the best option. maybe just a postcard saying something like "more info to follow, but please save the week of blahblahblah for the destination wedding of x and x." that way people know the basic who what when, and then as soon as you nail down the exact when and where you can send an official STD, later followed by the actual invite.

depending on how large your party is, i would send out a more official version of a pre-std, not just email or word of mouth. you want the guests to know its serious and its coming up, we're not just discussing it. so something printed. maybe using vistaprint or another less expensive/free postcard service?

Our STDs hardly had any info on them.  We knew about when we wanted to get married but didn't know the exact date as flight schedules weren't out yet, so all we included was the month (January 2012) and our resort.  When we sent them out we did have a date booked with the wedding planner at the resort, but didnt want to include it as we knew it might change (and it did).

Thank you for sharing your STD's! We also have no solid details and I would like to get the world out for our guests to start saving for our January 2016 nuptials. This information definitely helped.

Our deposit is only $50 and due within 30 days. Since it is refundable until 6 months before the wedding, my fiance and I decided to pay the deposit for each person to hold the space. We felt this gave us more time to get the information to our guests. We have given a verbal save the date to everyone, then we will send save the dates/invites once we have all the details.
