How long does it take to ship to D.R.

Hello I am having a destination wedding in Punta Cana D.R. on January 15 2012. My fiance and I plan on shipping some decor and other items to the resort before we arrive. How far in advance should we ship out items? Please help.

Do you have a lot of decor?  Because I keep reading about people taking it with them on the plane, paying the extra for an extra bag, or getting other people to carry it in there luggage.
