Virginia Legal Ceremony

Recommended Posts

David and I are getting married in VA before we go to Mexico. Something about the idea of paying someone $150 to stick needles in my arm in Mexico just doesn't sound appealing to me :). Does anyone in VA know how the legal/courthouse ceremony works? I am sure I can google it and figure it out, but I thought it would be easier to talk to someone who has been through the process.

Thanks!

Thanks, Lisa. It's kind of scary how easy it is to get married!

Cost of License

What is the cost of a marriage license?

The marriage license fee is $30.00 dollars. Accepted forms of payment are cash.

Residency Requirements

What are the residency requirments for Virginia?

None. You do not have to be a previous or current resident of Virginia to obtain a marriage license that is valid statewide.

Waiting Period

Is there a waiting period from the application date to the date the license is issued?

No, you will receive your license immediately.

No, you can marry immediately after receiving your license.

Laura, a couple we know went to the courthouse to get married and they were given the name of a woman who did the ceremony in Ft. Ward on a Saturday morning, it was beautiful and she was really nice. I think they were told it had to be done by a licensed officiant and that the courthouse actually doesn't do them in the building. I can try to get the info for the lady if you want, I am not sure if they still have it because they moved to Japan, but they might.

You know Laura I just thought of this...their names are David and Lauren...that is really weird. I will e-mail them and hopefully get the info. The lady was so nice and made it feel more like a wedding than a courthouse thing.

rofl.gifrofl.gif Ok I'm soooo sorry but I think I'm tired right now....When I saw the title of this thread I thought it said Vagina Legal Ceremony.....I had to do a double take to make sure I read it wrong...yup I did.....

Sorry...

Back to topic...

I think it's easier to do paperwork in the states....It took like 5mins to do ours on our legal ceremony day...but that was in Ca.

Wow, haha. I just did a double take just to make sure I didn't make a major typo. :)

That is so weird. I guess it's meant to be. :) Please let me know if you cam find out the woman's name, but no worries if it's too much trouble.

Thanks again!

We got married at the Courthouse in Arlington. It was super easy...went something like this:

A random Wednesday, on our lunch hour... (oh, and we are DC residents, not VA residents)

We took the Metro to Courthouse, went inside and up to the marriage license office. Paid $30 and showed some ID, got the paperwork started.

Then we went across the street to this lawyer's office and they did a civil ceremony in the basement. I think it was $50, and they have someone there all day to do them. You can get their names from the people at the courthouse, and you can make an appointment beforehand.

Then you walk back to the courthouse, turn in the signed papers. Then you can come back the next day and get copies of the signed sealed certificate for $2 each.

I might have some of the details off (maybe the lawyer submits the paperwork in the end? I forget) but basically it was super easy and we did it all on our lunch hour. Then we walked across the street to Wendy's and got Frosty's!
