Hi Canadian gals!!!

I have a question for those of you that got married in Mexico or are getting married in Mexico.

We are to be wed in Cancun next year and we wanted to release a single floating lantern to the sky at night during our reception. Our resort has been giving me the run around first saying that they are an eco friendly hotel - however the lantern is biodegradeable. And then the manager said it would be possible during a webinar that was held with them. So I went back to our WC and she said it's possible but we have to obtain a $300 permit from the Mexican government in order to do so because the Yucatan penninsula is a protected area, etc.

At this point I am not sure what to believe and I have seen other brides who got married in Mexico do this. So I wanted to hear from you guys to see if anyone has had this experience.

We really want to release a lantern! So your feedback/help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hmmm....that's such a tricky one. Unfortunately I think this will really depend on the resort itself. Even though the latern is biodegradeable, I don't think that's the issue. Most hotels are worried about the laterns floating into buildings. And since so many building in Mexico have straw/reed roofs they are worried about fire concerns. I know this was the case in 2 seperate resorts we have visited. I have never heard about the permit issue.

The lanterns are beautiful. And I think if it's not to pricey, that I would take it with you and see once you are there if the hotel will allow it. But also be ready for them to say no and not be disappointed. wink.gif

But we are also considering Mexico. It is cheaper but from the reading I have been doing it seems like it can be a huge headache to actually get married there. Does anyone have any experience with Mexico and weddings, as far as all the legal requirements? We are also considering the option of providing guests with the option of staying at a more affordable resort if the one we choose is out of their budget. On the other hand the people that we are worried about not coming because of cost are my FIL and due to some recent issues we are having with them we would be very surprised if they were to even attend regardless of where it was. With that being said we will continue with our resort search

I realize price is a huge factor, and depending on where you and your guests are flying from Mexico, Cuba, Dominican, and Jamaica can all be priced from "affordable" to "never going to happen" . This is the one time I think you have to really decide what you want. You are the bride and groom-and it's your wedding! If Jamaica is calling your name, look at that option. You might be surprised to find some resorts that work into your budget. And remember- the cheapest option may not be the best. It will be no fun if the the resort has horrible rooms, bad food, and bad drinks.

As for legal requirements in Mexico to be married. You both need your birth certificates, should one of you be divorced-the paperwork showing the divorce is complete, and passports. Then in Mexico you will have a blood test (we were told it was to check for HIV and that the people getting married were not related-not sure exactly what it really does). The paperwork the day of your marriage is done in Spanish, you sign the papers, as well as apply a fingerprint to "seal the deal". After this you will have to have the marriage papers translated into english (usually most hotels will do this for you, but it can take 2-4 months). Then once you recieve your english copy, you take this to your city hall, etc. and have them essential legalize it and enter it into the system. You will usually also get a local marriage certificate. (if you don't do the step at home in Canada, you will not be legally viewed as married). Hope that helps.

I also really wanted to do a sky lantern release for my wedding at the end of the reception!!! Unfortunately I was told they are not allowed because they pose a potential fire risk.  At first I was irritated because I wanted to do it on the beach, so I didn't think it would be a problem, but I guess if it floats off in the wrong direction it could pose a ton of problems. :(  What I came up with instead is to give each guest a heart sparkler at the end of the night- for this I'm not going to ask because there is no fire potential with these!

Hello Fellow Canadian Brides!

I just wanted to give everyone a head's up about something that has just given me a mini-meltdown. It appears Transat has now posted AND changed their 2013 flight schedules for some gateways. I would suggest if you have a 2013 wedding and are booked through Transat that you contact your TA to check to see if this impacts your schedules at all.

For me - we had booked with the impression that everyone was leaving Saturday April 6, to Saturday April 13. This included people going from Ottawa (36ppl), Calgary (7ppl) and Edmonton (4ppl). Well...the "new" schedule came out, and they moved Edmonton's flights to the 5-12, and Calgary's to the 3-10. The wedding is on the 11th, so this means the Calgary schedule misses it alltogether, and the Edmonton one means people have to travel the day after the wedding............so I'm waiting to talk to my TA today to figure out this mess and see what we can do. Changing the wedding date doesn't seem to be much of an option, since the hotel is pretty booked up and I've already ordered things with the date.

Don't want to alarm anyone, but want to make sure you find this out ASAP if it also impacts your wedding - since my TA and I only found out because we specifically asked for the flight schedules as I had come across some posted on expedia.

We ran into this with our air transat flights for our May wedding. Very frustrating!! Hopefully you are able to get everything figured out without changing your date!
