Sky Lanterns!

Recommended Posts

We did this three weeks ago in Nassau, Bahamas.  We did ours through WishLantern and we got the Eco Wish Lanterns.  If you show that they're natural, biodegradable, etc. etc. it may help your case if you end up having to negotiate/defend them, just a thought.  In any case, they turned out awesome.  I think the part I liked best, aside from how beautiful they were, was watching all of my guests come together at the end of the night and just have fun doing a group activity together.  I wish I had some better pics for you, but our photographer wasn't contracted for the whole night :)  Here are a few though:

FranticBride,

We're doing this for our wedding in the Dominican Republic @ Dreams La Romana - actually we're doing it for the welcome party as a fun activity for everyone - we're also having people write wishes on them.

I asked my wedding coordinator at the resort to make sure it was okay - you should ask them, since each resort is different when it comes to these things.

I love the idea of sky lanterns! I wanted them to honor my father who had passed away this past March 2011 from pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately and understandably, Rocio WC of Grand Palladium Riviera Maya says sky lanterns are forbidden because the danger to the wildlife and surrounding jungle even if flown over the beach waters.

  • 2 weeks later...

We just got married on November 10th, and our resort allowed the lanterns. We had to send them off in the plaza with fountains (which still seemed a little dangerous to me, because the area is surrounded by trees!). The first lantern was let go a little early, and we all held our breath as it headed straight for the trees, but at the last minute it lifted! The rest were fine.

Many are not, even the ones that say they are. The only truly biodegradable lanterns are those that are wire-free. I looked long and hard and found a seller on Ebay "Sourcing4U Limited". The ring is bamboo, with flame-retarded string, and truly no metal or wire. I paid about $60 for 20 lanterns - they were pricier, but worth it for me.
