How do you clean your ring?

I use the La Sonic from bedbathandbeyond.com it's awesome. cleans it just like the jeweler. you have to buy the jewelry cleaner, which is a bummer but it's totally worth it. my jeweler said, i could clean it as often as i'd like, but just to check the stones if they ever become loose by holding the ring up to your ear and tapping it. if you hear a resonating sound, take it in. Which has happened to me. all good now though!! plus my ring is insured, so puts my mind and my fiance's mind at ease!

I had the same question. My friends dad is a jeweler and he said to just heat some water on the stove, not quite to boiling temp, remove from heat, add plain dish soap or windex and swirl your ring in the pot. It turns out beautifully! I have done it several times and it really works well.

I went to a jewelry store at the mall & they cleaned it in a minute. I haven't had a ring cleaned in a long time, but it took an hour when I did it before. Must be different equipment now. Afterwards, I realized the smudge on the top was still on it. I'm pretty sure it's from latex gloves. Once I get it off, I'm going to start wearing liners in my gloves to keep it from happening again.

i have the ultrasonic cleaner from sharper image too, which i use about 1x/week...still doesn't look like the steamer tho...i wear mine in the shower, but take it off to put on lotion/hair junk/etc...i also try to wear gloves when i clean.

 

btw - i found the BEST ringholder - i think it was at marshalls or tj maxx. it's a toothpick holder - one of the ones where you pull up the cover and the whole inside comes up. i lined it w/ a stretched out cotton ball, and it's perfect b/c i have a tendency to leave it in there when i do dishes and then forget about it, and i dont have to worry about the kittens jumping up on the counter (which they're not allowed to do but do it when we're not looking) to play with it.

Okay so I'm an obsessive freak about cleaning my ring but I don't have a pave setting which as noted is prone to falling out from overzealous cleaning -- it has happened to some of my cocktail rings. Mine is shared prong in platinum and I drop my ring in my Gemoro ultrasonic which I got online from Otto Frei and then "dry clean" it with my Jewel Jet steamer which I got from HSN. I clean them weekly cause it takes a whopping 5 minutes and all of my friends stare at my ring constantly cause it sparkles like crazy.

 

If you can't afford cleaning appliances, there's nothing wrong with a baby toothbrush and Dawn dishwashing soap. Diamonds and platinum can't be hurt by those other "jewelry cleaning liquids" but that stuff might wear down rhodium plating on white gold.

 

Yes, you should have your ring checked at least once a year by a reputable jeweler in your area (my FI got my ring directly thru a NYC diamond dealer so I didn't have a "store" to go to regularly. I had to find one near me - our independent appraiser recommended several to me and I trust his opinion).
