Good base for exploring Mayan ruins?

this is my honeymoon... hah.

border crossing is straight forward- no paperwork but your passport. however, it's very difficult to be able to rent a car in mexico and take it into belize. most rental agencies won't allow it. there are plenty of private transfer services in belize, that will come pick you up in mexico and take you into belize. we're using BelizeTransfers.com Home. there is public transportation between the two countries and it's very cheap. it can also be very slow and very no frills- think repurposed yellow school bus.
