Would you get married at a resort that did not allow you to chose your own vendors?

As a vendor I understand, that doing your own choices and chose the supplier that match with your style is one of the most important points to keep the bride and the groom more relax during the wedding planning process!

We have a more beach, organic and rustic style and is so important when the brides and groom want this kind of decor and flower arrangements see that is what we use to do...  other vendors maybe can specialize in more traditional decor, crystals, monumental arrangements... Is so important we have this match with your vendor!

Absolutely NOT!

This is such an important day in any couple's lives, and is a very personal and intimate occasion. Every bride has her idea of what would make the day exactly how she (or they) dreamed it would be. I would never go to a place that would restrict my options for making our day exactly how I want it. If you think about how much money each couple brings into the resort with just room stays alone for themselves and ALL their guests, that it already THOUSANDS of dollars! Do they really have to be so greedy to make even MORE money on the extras that people would want to have that they FORCE you into choosing from only what they have? I don't believe the excuses given saying it is for the resorts protection...I don't think I've ever heard a bride blame some mishap say, on her own photographer's part on the resort! That would just be ludicrous!

I think that any resort that chooses to do this will really regret their decision and ultimately have to drop that policy. I think just based on principle alone people would walk away and choose something more flexible let alone forcing people into limited options. As I'm sure we all know, our ideas are constantly evolving and changing and finances sometimes change, I would want to be able to change my mind as many times as I need and be able to look for vendors that fit my needs and what I'm looking for. This is a business, and they are playing dirty...it won't go unnoticed by potential customers for long. I just hope that any bride that has unexpectedly had to deal with this can get their money back and take their business elsewhere without too much trouble on not only theirs but their guests part.

I am bringing my own photographer and knew I was going to do that before I even began looking at resorts. So for me I would not choose a resort that wouldn't allow outside vendors. I'm not using any other outside vendors but it would still anger me if the resort didn't allow it because they are creating a monopoly and can charge brides whatever price they want for the services then.

I voted "Maybe" because there are a lot of conditions on my response.  I am bringing my photographer with me - so not being allowed to bring a photographer (even as a guest) would be a deal breaker.  However, I am not planning on using any other outside vendors for my wedding.  One of the reasons I was drawn to a destination wedding is because it was supposed to be easier to plan because you are given fewer options (example:  the bride chooses the flowers, but the resort chooses the florist).  (Note I said supposed to be easier because when you factor in a legal wedding and AHR to plan you actually end up planning MORE than a traditional at-home wedding.)  But of course I only felt comfortable using the resort's vendors after seeing lots of pictures and reading great reviews from previous brides.  I would be truly upset if that policy were thrown at me last minute because you would not have that opportunity to check out those vendors (not to mention that you would likely lose deposit money for the vendors you had booked!).

I voted "maybe" because where I got married didn't have a lot of vendor options due to location, but they accommodated every request we made using the vendors they normally contract with.  I was allowed to bring my own photographer and this is the only area that would be a deal breaker.

In the example you provided though, that's crap!  A policy change should grandfather those already on the books.  Awful business practice!

That is why I said maybe too...for me, I didn't even think about "outside vendors" until I found this website! I just assumed resorts gave you an "all in" package or packages with add on's, so I was quite happy to have a list of photographers, dj's, etc to choose from.  The policy change is the biggest issue I think...resorts tend to do this often with little things and then once you get there, your kind of at their mercy, very sneaky and unprofessional! That bride should get her deposit back or at least be allowed an exception.

On a side note, I found that having a photographer who does tons of weddings at my resort really helped cut down on the time it took her to do our photos and find locations, and therefore gave us exactly the photos we wanted in a timely manner so we could join our guests at cocktail hour to get some candid shots.rolleyes.gif

I'm a Maybe.  It all depends on who the vendors are at the resort.  If they're good then it's not a problem.  However, in our case we were very underwhelmed with the resort photography choices, so we paid a fee to bring someone in from the outside.  Had we not been able to, it would have been a deal breaker.
